Pace Factor

Post by decoykrvr »

Years ago, when I took surveying in college and it was all done manually w/ a theodolite and stadia rod, the first thing which we all had to do was determine our "Pace Factor". This is something which every hunter should know and re-evaluate every few years. Even w/ 2 total knee replacements, I've maintained my old 33" standard pace factor. I not only pace off every kill, regardless the species, but also check distances in the woods and fields on animals which I have let walk or inanimate objects. Anything which you can do along this line will enhance and reinforce your hunting skills and abilities. Your eyes may deceive you, your battery powered range finder may fail or be inoperative, but your pace factor, with practice, doesn't fail and can be very accurate.

Truth
I’ve often erred on the side of caution and haven’t shot gobblers that I very easily could’ve When I stand up after the gobbler is long gone and I see how far he actually wasn’t I throw up a lil and move on

When I shot 3D weekly I got good at range estimation using your method. Dips in terrain, hollows ect always give me fits.

No better way to develop ranging skills then 3d! Remember also when hunting steep terrain to figure in the angle compensation. It may be 50 yards and out of range on the ground but 40 yards compensated for angle trajectory.

Pace count and dead reckoning.
Terrian association.
Map, protractor, compass, gm angle.

Bread and butter basic skills for a 11B on this rock.
100 meter pace count.
62 times left foot hit the ground on level open terrian.
65 67 on rolling ground.
72 steep ground or night.
Steep ground dependant on slope.
Could be up to 80 85 if ya can't see the top.
If ya can see the top.
Get the " F " up it...
Screw pace count.
Just reorientate at top.

Anyone ever have a 2LT plan a movement in the Yama,s ( mountains) in Korea in his 22 yr old 2d mind measuring distance on a map.
Or try explaining a slope distance chart to him on same map.

Uh sir ...
That 3700 m movement you got planned for tonight is more like 6200 meters.
And we ain't gonna make that hit time..

Oh OK sir knuckle of head don't listen to your NCO,s...
We will do it your way.
No problemo.....

Movement to daylight.
CO and BC reaming 2lt azz via the radio...

CSM having talk with NCO,s involved.

2lt next movement asking for NCO,s input.

Been going on since valley forge....

LOL!!!!

22 is my 40 yd count.

I roll with 6 for every 10 yds when deke hunting.
24 is just under 43 yds versus my meter count pace count.

So that is how all that fluff above relates to a pace count for thunder chicken hunting.
Sometimes when field hunting I will put out 3 or 4 branches stuck in the ground.
L and R oblique and center out to 40 45 yds.
Bout max for LB shells for me.
