18.5" barrel

Post by Jake.251 »

Looking at a tactical shot gun with an 18.5" barrel. I shoot tss #9 1 5/8 oz hand loads. Does anyone have any experience or pattern testing with a barrel this short? Will it pattern and how much would it effect velocity?

Yes I just recently put together a Mossberg 510 and using an Indian Creek .562 it does as good as any longer barrel gun I have messed with. I can get pattern to over 300 in 10" @ 40 with an Indian Creek .555 but for who I got gun set up for I like it a little more open.

My Weatherby 459 w/ a 18 1/2" barrel and a Sumtoy .562 shooting 1 5/8 oz of 9's, produces an even 20" with a core of 285-300 depending on temp and humidity. The loss of fps is immaterial due to the pellet energy delivered on target. When patterning past 45 yards, the gun has ghost ring sights, I hold on the head w/ my life-size profiles which is good out to 50 yards which is my maximum range w/ open sights.
