Rem. 870 Express 12 ga. Super Mag

Post by GLS »

I'm giving to the son of family friends my Super Mag. He's taken an interest in turkey hunting. My generosity doesn't extent to loading TSS for him. ;) What readily available choke (don't even suggest the most expensive ones) would one suggest to shoot, gag, Win. Longbeards?? I figure that's the least expensive way to go and something he can buy off the shelf. I'm recommending Williams Fire Sights...Gil

My 870 was partial to the IC 650 I think. Also shoots LB #6s well. Don’t know how much it costs to load TSS but I know the LBs are less expensive to BUY….

Mine also like the IC with the Longbeard #6s in 3 or 3 1/2. Not so much with 5's though. I also believe it shot relatively well with one of the Primos chokes if your looking little less expensive. Great gun though!

I've had good results with an older xxx full Comp n choke and an old Hastings choke. However, I've never really chased numbers.

I would definitely suggest that the young man be directed to shoot a bunch of field loads at targets near and out to 40 yards, and further practice and hunt w/ 3" turkey loads and to stay away from 3 1/2" shells. I really can't think of a better gift for a budding hunter than an appropriate firearm, and you are to be commended. You now also have the responsibility to explain to the young man the reality of succumbing to the "disease" which we call turkey hunting.

I have a Rhino 660 in mine with Nitros 4x5x7. They kick like a mule givin' birth to a tractor trailer, but they were cheap. I also shot the Longbeards #6's and you can't beat them for the money.
I heard something some type of Trot ammo....coyote trot, Buffalo trot...anyway, apparently it's way over priced and doesn't perform, kinda like a gay porn star on his wedding night with a woman???

I get great results with a .660" Carlson's LB choke out of my RESM 12ga 3.5" 2 and 2.125oz #5's of WLBXR shells. Also did as well with IC BD strike .665" choke.
Only reason I bought the IC choke as Cabela's/BP had them on sale really cheap.
My average was 38-40% of pellets in a 10" circle at 40 yards.
