Mossberg SA-28 Pattern Test
Picked up a Mossberg SA-28 Turkey this week after reading some reviews. Ordered a FF3 and an IC 525 choke and set out today to pattern it. Impressed is an understatement. I didn’t have anything to make a good 10” circle but I did have a straight edge so 10” & 20” squared it was. Just need some Cherry Bombs to test now.

That looks awesome
Re: Mossberg SA-28 Pattern Test
The SA 28 is a beautiful gun! I am conflicted between the SA410 and SA 28.
I built a 28 ga youth gun for my son from the Walmart Hatfield SAS 28. We used it with 1 oz TSS BB to kill deer, so I’m an instant 28 fan!!
Do you see the benefits of more than 1 ounce loads?

Thats some nice patterns.
The .525 IC looks like a good one nice and even spread in the 10 & 20"

Did you order the IC 525 from IC? I did not see any 28 gauge choke tubes on their website.

Found it at Simmons Sporting Goods. It was listed on their website. Only place I could find them in stock.bertienchunter wrote: ↑March 12th, 2023, 11:02 pm Did you order the IC 525 from IC? I did not see any 28 gauge choke tubes on their website.

I tried the IC 520 and 525 in my two SA28’s, one is an all purpose and the other is the new tactical turkey. The all purpose likes the 525 and the tactical turkey really liked the 520.
Try the factory choke, nothing to sneeze at either.

I have a Hatfield 28ga from Walmart. Have you had any trouble with yours? Any cycling issues? I figured it was a good way to get my feet with the 28ga.Krm944 wrote: ↑March 4th, 2023, 5:44 pm The SA 28 is a beautiful gun! I am conflicted between the SA410 and SA 28.

I have tested Federal, Fiochhi, handloads with Cheddite hulls and just recently Rio ammunition.
Rio ammunition loads fine, but would not extract.
All other ammunition tested runs like a sewing machine out of the gun. I did learn that when loading shells in the tube magazine, you can load them in front of the shell stop. The best way to describe it, is to “feel” for two clicks when you slide a shell in. In the instance that I was not getting the shells behind the shell stop, as the elevator came down, a shell would fall out the bottom of the gun. This happened first when my son loaded the gun, next when I loaded with gloves. I think a relief cut would help those with large thumbs loading the tube. I don’t fault the gun for this.
I want to measure the Rio shells. I don’t have anything that is accurate enough to differentiate between the other hulls. Right now I don’t know if it’s an ammo issue or a gun issue. I read somewhere that Rio hulls (plastic) would expand/swell when fired.
Overall, I really like the gun. Any issues with yours?
Re: Mossberg SA-28 Pattern Test
I haven't shot mine yet. I'm going to run some factory loads through it to see how it does. I wanted a inexpensive 28 gauge to see how I like the 28.
Re: Mossberg SA-28 Pattern Test
I think you will really like it. Federal Top Gun from Walmart is what I used to break it in. It’s opened my eyes to the capabilities and versatility of the 28 gauge.
Re: Mossberg SA-28 Pattern Test
That's what I got to break in mine, Federal Top Gun 7 1/2s. I'm sure the 28ga I'll like. Im just unsure about the Hatfield. Everything I have heard about the Hatfields is the 28ga is usually a decent gun. We shall see....

Re: Mossberg SA-28 Pattern Test
I shot mine in the Tac Turkey 22” with the .525 and it shot great. I’m shooting Cherry Bombs in #9’s. Gonna try a couple other chokes. Can’t wait to try the .520 but really can’t see it being much better. It’s a keeper.
Re: Mossberg SA-28 Pattern Test
I wonder how a 1oz load of 9s, 9 1/2s or 10s would do in the SA28?

Re: Mossberg SA-28 Pattern Test
That would likely work well at 40yds. My SA-28 compact shoots great patterns with 1 3/8 oz handloads. I haven't tried any lighter loads, but I'm sure with the right choke they would work well at 40 or so yds.
