Wanting a wingbone call.

Post by squirrel_hunter »

I want to start trying to learn how to use one. Who makes a good wingbone call? I have a home made wingbone call. Just dont sound right. My friend has a nice one. But cant remember the name of the guy made his. I dont want to buy a high dollar one at first. I am bad about losing stuff.

X2, to shorten your learning curve and help you to stick with the learning process
you will want to get one from someone that knows how to put them together and tune them correctly.

The 2 mentioned above will send it with a lanyard, you won't lose it any faster than a tube or crow call.

Is a trumpet easier to learn to use than a wingbone? One reason i want to learn nobody in my neck of the woods uses one. The other reason they sound good.

They are different. One not necessarily easier.

For wingbone a i 2nd Tony Ezolt and Mark Shape; I’d also add Gerry Bramlett. I’ve been running one of his and really like it.

Had no clue what I was doing, made 3 so far and working on two more, killed my last two birds with the first one I made! No tuning, no clue and they work extremely well!

Arnie Jonathan
AJ Hiner
And there’s a few more who do really good on building great sounding yelpers.

But a Cane Yelper from Guesswho can’t be beat

Carl Larue makes a good sounding wingbone. Also recommend the cane yelper from guesswho. Both calls flat out talk turkey.

Mark Sharpe and Tony Ezolt with a big X2 !
AJ Hiner and Fatbeard from OG are some good ones also ..
But I hunt a very special one as it was made by and old school builder ( Lamar William's) and it is inscribed with Bones ( my father's nickname ) and dates of his entrance into and exit from this world .. mine is the right hand bone and my Buddy has the left hand bone identically inscribed as my dad made sure we had plenty of good places to hunt throughout our childhood !

It often won’t sound right for a little while. The one you have may be ok. Look up Dirt Road Grocery Store on YouTube. He has a 2 part series on using a suction call. Good beginner instruction. Listen to one of the Mark Prudhomme, Permar or Rev. Zach Farmer videos. They are on another level, but making consistent hunting calls is attainable with practice.

It is my opinion that it is more important to learn how to use the call, practice practice practice. Just because the call is Purdy And expensive doesn’t necessarily mean it’s better. I have made several wing bone calls to me a hen wing has a better sound.

I can’t recommend the Cane Yelper by GuessWho enough….
It works, no telling how many birds last years travel call lead to their demise… plus you can prolly get 3 or 4 of them for what a custom wingbone costs….

Would be most interested in a Cane Yelper from GuessWho! How do I get in touch?
