PT Part 2

Post by HunterGKS »

Day 1, 06/30

I was able to get more PT sessions from my insurance. Started today & will be going twice a week for 4
weeks as well as going to my fitness center twice a week & doing the exercises at home.

Flexibility goals:

Bend = 120 - 125 Current = 118

Straight = 0 Current = 0.

I had a small backslide from 119 but I hope to get back within a session or 2. We went at it pretty hard
today & I am a little sore. Hopefully that won’t last too long.

*********************************

Had a Doc appt this morning, 07/01, & he was pleased with my progress. I asked about re-starting the
treadmill & weights. The treadmill is OK at a lower incline but I need to hold off on the weights until
the end of the month & then at ½ or less then what I was doing before the surgery. All in all, a positive
meeting.

*********************************

Day 2, 07/02

We added several more exercises today which are designed to get my quads working a lot better. I
have been having problems with my gait &, after this session, my walking improved tremendously. I
am starting to have a more positive attitude about my progress. We didn’t have time to do the
measurements today but I feel fairly certain that I gained a little ground. Now it’s just keeping on
keeping on.

*********************************

Day 3, 07/07

Flexibility goals:

Bend = 120 - 125 Current = 121

Straight = 0 Current = 0.

Over the last few days, I regained the bend I had lost & added 2 additional points. One of the new
exercises is what I call a quad flex. I did a lot of the flexes over the weekend & it has helped my
walking tremendously. I will be concentrating on the flexes as well as doing the usual at-home
exercises. Things are moving along pretty well, thank goodness.

Thx. There are times when it feels like it's killing me. Like this morning.
I got out of bed & couldn't straighten my leg without a lot of pain. It did
come around in a few minutes but it was scary.

I've had totals on both knees, the last 1/11 of this year. I'd advise you to up your flex goal to 130. A great exercise is to sit in a rocker or glider type chair, I prefer a glider, and rock gently back and forth, pulling you knee up under you in slight increments. This is a minimal pain exercise which you can do for extended periods while watching tv, etc.. You'll be amazed at the effacacy of this simple exercise which I do first thing every mornimg while drinking coffee, watching the news/weather to just loosen everything up for the day and to eliminate any stiffness. Good luck, but tremember you can do a little too much and actually set yourself back.

This is my 2nd total as well. I do something similar to what you posted &try to do it several times
a day. I also do a lot of quad flexes which help with my gait. I let my body tell me when to stop
& am smart enough to listen & stop.

Thx for the input.

Hognutz,
I've called on and worked w/ Orthopedic surgeons for almost 30 years and most will advise you to cease injections of corticosteroid metabolites 3 months prior to any surgery and the Dr's in the practice I utilize have even moved it back to 6 months in an effort to minimize the potential for adverse reactions and infection. Start working on some pre-surgery exercises to strengthen your leg which will really help your rehab. Good luck and as I was telling someone the other day, " I'm about back to my full range of motion which will come with time, but the best thing is that my knees don't hurt anymore!!"

I had my last injection on May18th. As per the last TKR, the surgeon wanted a 3 month window, minimum, before surgery. This will give me 5+ months. I started my pre-op exercises 2 months before the last operation. Will do the same this time. I also have a recumbent elliptical machine that I do 33 minutes a day on. (Weekdays). After my TKR I did 7 days a week but at a diminished rate. In fact, I just got done with my workout. 5 miles and change in 33 min. It's a great tool for rehab!

I can attest to that. I started doing leg exercises a couple of months after the right was replaced in 2012 &
have been doing them at least twice a week since then. Makes a huge difference in recovery efforts.

That looks very similar to the machine I use at the PT center & the 1 at my fitness
center which is a NuStep. I use each twice a week with the times varying from
5-20 mins depending what else is planned.
