My son, Nick had drawn a quota permit for a South Florida WMA this year beginning today through the weekend and I was the guest hunter. He took off work and we left the house at 3:30 and headed to the WMA arriving there around 6:00 where I had scouted one early morning last week, hearing a couple gobblers in the area. When arrived at the end of the trail a couple hunters in a truck were just gearing up. Spoke with them a few minutes, wished them luck and backed out and headed back down the trail. We decided to try Plan B in a freshly burned area and parked and listened at the truck for a while. We heard at least three birds talking in different directions and decided on the closer bird. We walked away from the trail and into the burned area a ways. Found a open pine area with Saw palmettos to set up in. 10-15 minutes later two small hens come in to the calling from the way we walked in to within 10 feet of us. They finally turned away and left. Not 10 minutes later a mature hen comes in from the opposite direction and walks in front of us maybe 35 yards. As she get near a clump of palmettos she seems skittish and thought he saw us move or something. About that time I see another birds head pop back behind her. It's white, then I see a fan. Then another fan. Two toms had come in from the south through cover to meet up with the hen.

The toms were strutting and one was puffed up and shaking. The hen walked into the clearing by a couple pines and the toms followed her. Nick was sitting on the left side and took the shot and dropped the tom at 28 yards at 8:15 this morning, a clear cool 58 degrees, with some patchy fog. A gorgeous morning to be in the turkey woods! We checked the bird in at 18.5 pounds, 10 1/8" beard and 1.5" and 1 3/8" spurs. He was a real scrapper, missing tail feather, battle bruises and scars, and had been busy dragging his wings all over the area!

This is what we have waited so long for. And we get to do it again this weekend!

I WANT ONE!

Incredible turkey and sounds like a great hunt. Congrats to him. And to you for getting to watch it.
