Semi auto 20 gauge
Semi auto 20 gauge
I have always used pumps or singles for turkey, but am considering setting up a semi auto ( basically just a new project).
Here is my question though.
Are there any semi autos that come stock with an 18-21 inch field barrel anymore? Or anything less than 24 inch for that matter?
I know I can get one cut or thread a slug barrel, but at this point I would rather stick with factory barrel if possible.

I saw something the other day saying that retay no longer drills and taps their receivers.
For a budget gun that fits your needs you can check into the Escort ps 20 youth model. I got one this year and so far its been solid. 22” barrel and dipped in bottomland. $425 out the door.

Thanks guys! I made a mistake passing on the 1187 youth model for all those years.
KY, I had a retay that had serious cycling issues, so I am apprehensive about them now. I am sure they have since worked that out but it's always in the back of my mind.
Awesome Razor, thank you! I will check that out for sure. I like the word budget.Chief Razor wrote: ↑April 30th, 2022, 8:47 am I saw something the other day saying that retay no longer drills and taps their receivers.

Also Razor, was this the gun that you had the choke fitment issues with? If so what choke pattern did you land on for your specific gun?Chief Razor wrote: ↑April 30th, 2022, 8:47 am I saw something the other day saying that retay no longer drills and taps their receivers.

I see they also offer a 20 guage turkey model with 22 inch barrel, rail and fiber optic sights as well now.

Re: Semi auto 20 gauge
Yes that was the gun. As long as it is a newer model with the V3 choke design it is rem choke compatible

Re: Semi auto 20 gauge
I bought a mossberg SA 20ga turkey gun. 22 inch barrel comes drilled and tapped with a base.
Re: Semi auto 20 gauge
Thanks guys, going to see what I can get ordered. I am probably going to try to find an Escort that uses the rem choke. I have some chokes to test already and I really like the results from them choke barrels.

Sportsman's Warehouse will ship to your local FFL if your LGS can't get one for you.jsh909 wrote: ↑May 1st, 2022, 2:19 pmThank you! This will be my 1st choice now. Re: Semi auto 20 gauge
The Weatherby is not drilled and tapped from the factory to my understanding. The moss SA-20 turkey is the lightest of all of them, drilled and tapped. The Retay turkey is nice... well built.. but I personally didn't like the fit as much as the SA-20 Turkey.
Re: Semi auto 20 gauge
Just so you don't beat yourself up about the 11-87 , I have a 20 ga sportsman with a 28 inch barrel and it weighs EXACTLY the same thing as my 30 inch 12 ga Premier .
I know this because it was ordered specifically to be the same weight and feel as my 12 ga Sporting Clay's gun . Went to O/U for sporting and doves so it really didn't matter in the end . Should have went with the 20 ga Premier its 1/2 lb lighter .
But as for performance the 11-87 has been a killer . Ducks by the truckloads , Doves by the Boxcar loads , 6 grand slams plus a large pile of other turkeys .. just retooled it this year to shoot TSS and it loves it 290's in the 10 and 170's in the 20 " .
Killed my first of the year in Ga opening morning and toted it for 6 days in FL just as a boat anchor ... lol

That weatherby is a good looking gun for sure. My next one will be a Stoeger 3020 compact. I plan to cut the barrel down to around 20”. Should be right around 5lbs
Re: Semi auto 20 gauge
Thanks for all the information guys! I am unconcerned about drilled and tapped. I use rifle sights.
I knew the 1187s were heavy, didn't know they were that heavy though. I carried a 10ga BPS up until last year though so any 20 is going to feel lighter. Last year for the most part I carried an 870 youth 20 and the 10ga some. This year has been the 870 exclusively and can say I am really liking the little gun.

Re: Semi auto 20 gauge
Keep in mind if you cut the barrel off to that length you will more than likely have to go with the thin wall choke system. Casey Napier on here cut his off to around 21" I think and ran into that very problem. Great lookin gun though!!!Chief Razor wrote: ↑May 2nd, 2022, 3:33 pm That weatherby is a good looking gun for sure. My next one will be a Stoeger 3020 compact. I like the features and weight on these guns a lot. How's the trigger?squirrel_hunter wrote: ↑April 30th, 2022, 5:28 pm I bought a mossberg SA 20ga turkey gun. 22 inch barrel comes drilled and tapped with a base.

The SA20 is an awesome little gun. The trigger is ok, but easily improved with the MCarbo trigger spring. Takes about 5 minutes to install.

So about an hour for me then?
I searched it, I think I could beat an hour on that install. Great video on the Mcarbo site.
