301 compact ?
301 compact ?
Interested In getting a 410 setup for next season. Looking at the savage 301. Has anyone compared the compact 22" barrel vs the 26" barrel. Interested in getting one but don't want to sacrifice any pattern loss being a 410.
Re: 301 compact ?
I was eye balling the Rossi compact, the 18.5 barrel is scary short! Love the idea of a sub 3lb gun!

Re: 301 compact ?
I’m no help to your specific question but I do have an old h&r single shot 410 barrel at Sumtoy now being chopped to 18” and threaded. Also adding a fastfire. Hoping to make it a handy gun to carry mainly when I’m calling for someone else
Can’t wait to try it out - but have no idea how it will do

Re: 301 compact ?
From what I’ve tested
The short barrels give up nothing on killabillity
They can pattern awesome
I have built 2 short barrel Mossberg 410’s that are short and compact
Just match the gun with the choke and load for perfection

Re: 301 compact ?
Hoobilly, what kind of velocity is lost going to shorter barrel. Got one, no chronograph, just curious?
Re: 301 compact ?
I have checked a couple of .410 loads over the chronograph to see the difference between a 26" barrel and an 18.5". The old rule of thumb of 5fps loss per inch of barrel is almost spot on in my comparisons. I showed 40-50 fps less velocity on the short barrel than in the 26. The patterns in the short barrel are amazing.

Indian Creek in either a 390 or 385. I went with the 390 because I wanted a little forgiveness, but I may try a 385 this summer just to compare.

Re: 301 compact ?
I've got the compact in the 20-gauge flavor. I really like it, as it's nice and lightweight.
