Stange turkey
Stange turkey
Anyone seen anything like this one? Strangest one I've ever killed. Acted perfectly normal. 23.5lbs and long spurs.

Yes, he was gobbling and acted perfectly normal. Weight was 23.5 lbs and had some age on him
Stange turkey
That is crazy looking! Really cool bird.
Maybe at some point, a piece of beak or spur got lodged in there in a fight. I have no clue. Just a wild guess.
Two years ago I had two bucks locked up fighting on our farm. The one that was dead had his G2 stuck in the back of the live bucks eye. The tine broke off in there, and I shot the buck I cut loose a year later and he had a horn growing out of where that tine had gone in the back of his eye socket. Strange things happen in the wild.

Re: Stange turkey
It is definitely a weird bird. Do you live near a nuclear power plant?

Re: Stange turkey
Should have at least kept the neck up. But I let the coyotes have it. Not real smart I guess.

Re: Stange turkey
If I were to guess, your game department would have just looked and said "Yep, that's an odd one. Never seen that before.", and left it at that. I'd have probably cut it open and tried to find a source. I bet it was some kind of injury that caused something to grow wildly, or it has a rhino in the family tree. That's worse than a Rio/Merriam's hybrid, an Eastern/rhino hybrid.

Re: Stange turkey
Im guessing your right about the game department. I killed another strange bird in Mexico (Goulds). Luckily Lovett Williams was there and did an autopsy on it. Lovette had only seen one other like it, but never a Goulds. I contacted NWTF and asked if they would be interested in it. They didn't give two flips.
