Swing and a miss

Post by Jakeblaster »

I called in a gobbler this morning. I only made 2 helps and then just shut up. As soon as his feet hit the ground he was coming to me. He stopped at 35 yds. I shot but he was inbetween a ton of scrub and I missed. He started running and I missed again and he flew away. This is only the second Turkey I have called in completely by myself. I hope I'll get him next time.

Persistence is the key. Stick with it and you'll succeed! You've proven that you can call a bird in. Now you've just got to close the deal!
It will happen sooner that later. I am sure of that!
Good luck!

Another important thing is to make sure your shotgun shoots to point of aim.

You have shot it at a target and patterned your shells at 40 yds., correct??

If the ole' tom's comin', don't rush the shot and let him get close and personal ;)

Anyone who hasn't missed hasn't shot at many or is simply overdue. Happens to all of us. Gil

He ain’t far. Spooked, but he ain’t far. That’s one thing to remember. Don’t let your finger get ahead of your brain.

I’m one of the few people who has never missed. Fired my share of warning shots, but have never missed.

It also doesn't count as a miss if you shoot just to show him whose side you are on. Gil

Gil & Hoo: that’s funny right there! I’m gonna have to use that next time!!

OP: I have been blessed to have participated in this craziness for 45 years. I too, have fired my share of warning shots. Hope it doesn’t happen again soon for either of us. Good luck!

Yes sir. I have it patterned 40. I killed a jake last year just on the line of 40. But I enjoyed this bird getting closer to me it just made my heart pump even faster.

That’s the trouble with a kill. Once it’s over, it’s over.

Oh, and when my buddy in Kentucky fires a warning shot he will shake his fist at the bird as it’s running or flying off and say “AND DON’T YOU EVER COME BACK” :LMAO:

MMMMMM .. My duck huntin' buddy In MI and I shot O/U's, back when, and a flock of teal came in when it was his turn to shoot, bang, bang, and nothing fell, the teal flew away and turned and came back as he reloaded, and bang, bang again, and he hollared " Take that you SOB's, and don't come back, shakin' his fist also" :LMAO:

If it’s one thing I have learned...Those second shots or running shots usually don’t do much but let someone know 6 hollers over you ain’t good at shooting!!!

I actually don’t know what’s worst the miss or every time in your life when you go past that spot you can close your eyes and reply that day

When I deer hunt with my pap..He shoots once kills the deer..Then unloads his REM 35 141 game master just to make noise...it’s pretty funny cause you know when he has kilt

Good job on getting the bird to the setup, that is the biggest hurdle there is anyhow. And dont feel bad about the miss, everyone will miss eventually. Heck, I missed two this year in a four day period, one was similar to what you had. Almost wrapped a $1,000 shotgun around a tree :D

Missing is sad when it happens but, it does happen. I've missed 2 or 3 that I can think of. Hate it.
