October jake
October jake
I got out Saturday to try an area that I had never hunted before, and was reminded how much I enjoy the fall forest. It was a beautiful fall day. I was also reminded how fun it is to strike one that is vocal and enthusiastic.
I walked and called a lot, covering between 5 and 6 miles, sat and cold-called a few times, and finally struck a bird at 1:30. He responded the first time with a keekee. I was on a steep ridge beside a creek, and he answered as I was about to drop and cross the creek. I had to climb up the hill to get to a point where I could lean against a tree and see about 25 yds ahead while I stood up. He came down the hill, answering each kee-kee run in the process. He did a keekee-yelp-gobble run at one point, which is probably my favorite call to hear. Turns out he was by himself and likely explains why he was so responsive...

Hal, a camo gun? Red dot? Things will never be the same. Gil

Yeah, grudgingly had to concede that I can no longer see the bead and the bird at the same time. I’ve missed more the last 3 springs than the rest of my Turkey life combined.GLS wrote:Hal, a camo gun? Red dot? Things will never be the same. Gil
As for the camo, oh well. Couldn’t find a Stevens 301 with wood...
A new normal I guess, because I really like toting the 20 ga and .410 301. Wish they had a 28 ga...

Once one hits a certain age, farsightedness often enters the picture. It's been over 25 years since I joined the Presbyopian Congregation and went to a red dot. It helps.
Re: October jake
I'm counting on my better-late-than-never repentance to save me from my recent transgressions. The pain of playing everything just right to get to the moment of truth and then missing, is a heavy burden to bear. Especially when one formerly took pride in very rarely missing. I had two fly down into my wheel house right off the roost last spring, and then watched them fly right back in the direction they came from after I whiffed. That second one last year was the final straw. Especially in the wake of missing three afternoon birds the previous year. Ask me after next spring season if I'm going to join the choir or not...

Re: October jake
Sounds like my experience. I changed to a vortex venom three seasons ago. I think I missed more birds in the three years leading up to that than I had during the 20 or so years before. I can't blame all of it on my vision because I just shot too fast on several occasions at birds that were about to head for safer ground and never got down on the gun. However, tighter patterns and worse vision were not going to help in improving that. I bit the bullet and added a sight after previously swearing by the double bead.
I hate to even say it because of Murphy's Law, but my percentage has improved dramatically with the Venom.

Put the dot on the bird's head and pull the trigger! Dead bird every time!! No guess work. If you miss with a properly sighted in red dot, it's not gonna be the sights fault. You have other issues.. They are the absolute answer to anyone with old eyes! No guff!!

Yep. If it is zeroed in correctly, where the dot lies, the shot flies. Gil

Congrats on the bird, Hal!
I had to go to an electronic sight about 15 years ago, but I always thought that Presbyopia was the fear of Presbyterians.

That would be Presbyphobia. Gilpoorcountrypreacher wrote: ↑November 6th, 2020, 9:28 pm Congrats on the bird, Hal!

Red dot is the way to go, put one on 7-8 years ago & have missed just one. Mike
