Black Hills Bound

Post by Hobbes_mobile »

The Black Hills is a location that I've wanted to hunt since watching Brad Harris hunt there in the early 90s VHS tape Thundering Toms. It seems crazy that I've been within relatively easy striking distance, 8 hours, from CO and now MT since 2006 and haven't hunted there yet.

I had it marked on my work calendar since about December, but I'd given up on really going once this virus stuff kicked in. Last week I was thinking "holy smokes, season is nearly over and I've not hunted enough". It felt like I'd barely scratched the itch. It didn't take much convincing for me to order a Black Hills tag last Wednesday. It showed up on Saturday.

The plan is to leave MT Thursday late afternoon and show up to SD very late that night. I'll probably sleep in Friday morning to recover from drive and start scouting and hunting Friday afternoon. I'll hunt through Tuesday morning. My wife will be going with me. She wont be hunting, so I'll take some time with her also. We've visited the tourist areas a few times, so probably mostly be chilling in town. I'll have to buy her some Black Hills gold for going along with this madness. 😁

I'm here now with my wife. We've been in Deadwood for 4 days & hunting a few miles away starting Thursday thru Sunday. Thought I'd get the sight-seeing out of the way first. Good luck!

I won't make it there until late Friday afternoon. I was unable to complete something that needs done before I leave. I'm hoping to at least do some driving and scouting tomorrow evening.

Gobbled like crazy on roost then shut up. Had a hen with them. Gonna hit them up again at roost time. Trying other areas during the day.

May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

I'm on the road. We are getting fuel in Sheridan. We should be there by 7 PM. Hopefully I'll get to drive around and listen a little before dark.

I had very little time this evening. My original plan was to be here at noon and have all afternoon to scout/hunt. That didn't happen, so I did what I could and drove a loop through the hills. I found a place that I'll start from in the morning, but I didn't hear anything this evening. It's supposed to start raining at noon.

Yeah.. That’s happened to me several times! Sometimes you can go back and delete them. No harm, no foul! :thumbleft:

Not a peep so far. Was raining and blowing at daylight, but improved since then. Although the wind is picking up at least up high on this point. The search continues.
Thunderstorms forecast for afternoon.

Hopefully midday you’ll get some response and get in front of them.

I’ve heard a lot of hunters say the same thing. No gobbler talk

Hunted until 10:30. I saw one hen.
Clouds have gotten dark. I'm eating lunch with my wife then heading out to look at new country. If it's storming, I'll just be driving. I don't mind a little rain, but heavy rain with thunder, lightning, and wind isn't something I'm interested in.

I'll find them.......I think. :)

Good luck. Weather forecast for that area is pretty decent from tomorrow through the 31st. Tried to put together a quick trip to take advantage of WY's season extension but last minute airfares are astronomical even during the "crisis" and was getting the old eye roll from the wife. Oh well.
