How much shot in the shell you are using? I tested out my new Savage 555 the other day with 1 5/8 oz handloads and thought I was firing a 10ga!

Exactly why I sold my 28. Bought it for my daughter and with 1.5 oz load it was the sharpest kicking lil gun you could imagine.

Much softer shooting 1 3/8 20 gauge loads.

It has nothing to do with the 28 gauge per se. Just use a recoil calculator and you will see that recoil is a combination of shot weight, velocity, and gun weight. When you start shooting 1.5 oz loads at 1100 fps out of a 5 pound gun you are going to get a lot of recoil. You will get as much recoil as a 2oz. 12 gauge load out of a 7 pound gun. Most hunting 28 gauge loads are 3/4 up to 1 oz. If you want less recoil you need to use lighter loads or a heavier gun.
