Day 1 of the 2019 Ohio Deer Season

Post by HunterGKS »

As I rode back the main lane to the woods, I saw a huge doe standing just into the turnip field.
She stood there & watched me until I was within 10-15 yards before she ran SW. Sadly, this was
the closest encounter I had with a deer today.

I was ready to go at 06:50 with the temp at 36, misty rain, breezy, & totally overcast. I heard
the 1st shot of the season at 07:23 to my west.

At 09:12, 3 foxes moved into the plowed ground looking for breakfast. It also started snowing.
It snowed off & on all day with no accumulation. When it wasn’t snowing, it was misty rain.

At 09:55, 2 does ran across in front of me NE to SW out of range. At 10:03, 3 more does ran in
from the NE, stopped (out of range), looked into the west woods, & ran SE to the middle of the
field, stopping again & milling around for several minutes before running east. At 10:24, another
doe came from the east & stopped behind a tree for a couple of minutes before moving south out
of range.

At 01:27, 2 foxes came out of the west woods running around the field, & back into the woods,
playing “tag.” At 01:36, another fox showed up right at the stand rummaging around for something
to eat. At 01:49, #7 fox moved into the field to eat. At 02:22, the 8th fox came out into the field
from the west wood.

At 02:28, a red-tailed hawk landed in a tree on the edge of the west woods. I watched it, expecting
it to swoop down & grab its free fox squirrel supper, for about 10 minutes before it flew NE. I couldn’t
see where it landed.

The temp was dropping, the wind picked up, & it started spitting rain so I headed in at 03:00. The
temp was 32.

God luck Jorge. My buddy in Kentucky always says it can go from horse turds to rose buds in a matter of seconds, or visa-versa.
