Removal of Light Surface Rust

Do you all have any recommendations as to a good method to remove light surface rust without harming the bluing or metal? I read this article https://rustconverters.net/bull-frog-ru ... er-review/, what do you say about it? Thanx a lot, Gabriel.

Gabriel...Good gun oil and 0000 steel wool. Wet the area down liberally (I really hate that word) as well as some on the steel wool. Rub lightly. Long strokes. Don’t concentrate on one area. You’ll be good to go.. Let us know how it shakes out.

Oil and you can also rub a copper penny over it and will not take any bluing off

If you can find it, you're better off utilizing fine/super-fine bronze wool on your initial attempt to remove the rust. The bronze wool is less abrasive and sofer that the steel wool and is less likely to remove blueing. You can always use a more abrasive steel wool if the bronze isn't totally effective, but you can't easily replace the blueing.

I was shown many years ago by a top gunsmith that a heavy paper bag works well without damaging the blueing.

Is the brown paper utilized in a dry state ? I've utilized the rubber compound light abrasive erasers, but even the finest grit can be excessive. For very light bluing discoloration or spotting usually caused by oil/salt on the hands, I've employed jewelers rouge on a soft cotton cloth.

All of the above are effective. For deeper stubborn rust spots, a brass rifle cartridge with the mouth flattened as the working edge works great. It won't scratch steel but does fine on the rust. Gi
