Drill and Tap 870

Post by I-C-20 »

ImageSo how hard is it to drill and tap a rem 870 - 20g receiver? Bought a 20g compact year ago and want to throw a 336 base on, needs 2 -#8-40 holes. Do you drill all the way through top of receiver or only as far as needed? Best taps to get? It's something I'd like to try just never did one. Any thoughts??? Thanks...

Never tapped one myself. I watched my smith do several for me and he uses regular drill n taps unless is super hard like a crio barrel receiver

I have tapped several 870’s 12’s 20’s and .410
They are easy to do with the right tools.
I’ve tapped all the way through and stopped short on a couple. Piece of cake and anyone that says there isn’t enough meat is full of crap.

Drilling and tapping the holes is not hard to do but easy to mess up. It is very easy to get them out of center and or out of alignment.

I've drilled several 870s and 1187s. Plenty of meat, I used a 6-48 tap though. All were done on a protrak milling machine so I could indicate everything 0 and square.

I have a Bridgeport mill in my basement that I do them on. It is easy to keep everything where it is suppose to be. I have done a few 8-40 but most are 6-48.

I mounted it further back on receiver. Sight acquisition is right there when I shoulder the it. I posted a pic on my original post above.
I've never used a reflex/red dot sight before, always a bead, or drilled and tap a receiver, lol, but I think this came out good. The Spur Sight is nice and clear, crisp dot, Just got to put it to paper and see how it holds up...
