Day 1 of the 2019 Ohio Bonus Season
Ohio has had a split season for several years but I have never hunted it until today. The weather called for the temps
to start in the high 20s & continue to rise into the low 40s. They did also call for up to 10 MPH winds which would
drop the wind chill by quite a bit. I took only the basics.
I was ready to go at 07:30 with the temp at 30, overcast skies, but, luckily, dead calm. At 07:55, a red ran through.
08:20 was a busy time. A fox sat on a branch a few feet from the blind watching me for several minutes before the
red chased it off. A truck had stopped on the road south of me & I thought 2 people were walking straight towards
me. When they turned & started to angle to the east, I could see it was 2 deer but couldn’t tell buck or doe. I think
the driver knew I was there & tried to send the deer my way but it didn’t work. They walked/trotted to the NE &
probably went into the next woods.
At about 09:15, at least 10 deer came running from the east. The 1st several were moving too fast for me to feel
comfortable with a shot but one of the last to past slowed to a walk. I took the shot & she ran about 30 yards into
the woods. She didn’t act like I hit near but I marked where she went into the woods. I walked over to where I
thought she went in but no blood. I walked a few feet & there was spray all over. I took a few steps into the weeds
& there she lay not much more than 10’ into the woods. I was able to drive the 4-wheeler within 5’ of here & only
had to drag here over a couple of large grape vines before hooking her up & pulling her back to my gutting spot.
I was headed to the house at10:13 with the temp up to 34, sunny skies, & high, fluffy clouds. By 11:15, i had her
washed out, hung, the loins pulled, & vacuum sealed. Should make some really good poppers!!
I do have another tag but will not get greedy. Besides, for some reason my back is screaming at me telling to
“CUT IT OUT!!!!” & I always listen to my back.
This pic is looking towards the woods from inside my blind. The deer was on the left edge of the pic about the
½ point. The tree limbs on the ground is where she entered the woods.
This pic is where she dropped just inside the field edge which is the bottom of the pic. I drove the 4-wheeler
up to the 2 small saplings.
This pic is pretty self-explanatory. The only dragging I had to do was over the grape vines by her head.

I forgot to mention that this doe had the most fat of any deer I have killed.
She had several globes the size of softballs & 1 like a football. And that
doesn’t include all the small chunks. Never seen anything like it!!

ever wonder where the white goes when the snow melts??
