Day 4 of the 2019 Ohio Deer Season

Post by HunterGKS »

It was 34, partially overcast, & calm at 07:00 when I was in my blind. The tweety birds
started early this morning, about 10 minutes before sunrise. Their songs & antics were
fun to listen to & watch.

At 07:35, the PIA red showed up & was here & there all day. At 07:45, something big,
round, & bright, BRIGHT yellow started to appear on the eastern horizon. I finally
figured out what it was. THE SUN!!!! It had been so long since I had seen one, I forgot
what a sunrise looked like!!

At 10:05, a fox showed up in the corner of the field to my right &, at 10:20, another
came into the field to my left. At 10:42, 2 started to play “tag” to my left.

At 11:03, 6 does came out of the far corner of the section of woods just to my right.
They didn’t appear to be spooked but just milled around out of range before running
east. At 11:32, another fox came for a visited but only stayed at the blind for a few
seconds before hitting the afterburners.

The squirrel dinner bell must have been rung at 01:56 as 3 foxes appeared in the corner
to my right, 2 more in the filed to my left, & a red in the brush to my right. The 3 were
all the same, small size. I think they are siblings from a late summer or early fall hatch.
They will be full grown by next fall. As Grandpa Jones would say: ‘YUM YUM!!”

It was a really nice day to be in the woods with the sun shining very little breeze, & not
too cold so I decided to stay until about 03:30 to test 2 theories. One being that the deer
would come out at 03:01, the other that they would appear at 03:15. Both theories were
proven false. It was 41 when I left. I’m hoping tomorrow is just as nice but more productive.

I have had to many bad things happen to both me & others I hunt with during late day hunts.
Besides, I have killed the vast majority of my deer in the morning. Last year was a case in point.
I killed a doe at 11:37 A.M. & a buck at 07:27 A.M..

I saw too many shots taken that shouldn't have been. I've seen deer that had to be track most of the night.
I've seen wounded deer that were never found. The last time I hunted late was over 20 years ago. I shot
a doe & thought I got a good hit. We trailed it for about 4 hours before stopping for the night. Found her
the next morning but critters had already gotten at her.

Yeah, I know. This type of stuff can happen during earlier hours as well but the chances it will happen are
considerably less. It's just not worth it for me.

Besides, as I said, I have killed most of my deer in the morning.
