tried and true striker woods

Post by Tidewater Tom »

I love one piece strikers and I already have more than I need. My favorite striker wood is snakewood. What is your go to striker wood on most surfaces?

I have a liking for hand whittled strikers. My favorite is an osage orange, whittled with a pocket knife by an old turkey killer from WV.

Dymond wood absolutely. I have heard Thin win is very similar (maybe the the same) and is also very very good. Nothing at all wrong with snake tho!

I've made strikers out of over 75 different woods from all over the world in my signature Boat Paddle design so variability is minimized. There are some great domestic woods such as Chinaberry, hard rock maple, black locust, osage orange, dogwood, black walnut, etc. and a lot of softer hardwoods like cedar, apple, pecan, mulberry. I always carry both soft and extremely hard wood strikers when I hunt, but wouldn't consider going into the woods without a striker made of Ipe and Massaranduba/Bulletwood. I also usually carry a striker tipped with synthetic corian and a dymondwood. Other great imported hard woods are jajoba, Honduran rosewood, Brazilian cherry, Hormingo negro, tulip wood, Australian cypress, purple heart, bloodwood, yellowheart, snakewood, paduk, babinga, wenge, pink ivory, black and white ivory, ebony, blackheart, etc.

Well, I have more Rutland Dymondwood than any other striker wood. Next is snakewood, then tulipwood, then purpleheart. I have several that represent one wood each. I put in some orders for some custom black locust and persimmon recently. Looking forward to trying them out. I talk myself out of buying more strikers than I actually buy.
