Busy Afternoon

Post by HunterGKS »

Today was the 1st day since Oct. that I have been able to get outside & get some work done.
It was a little breezy & overcast with the temp around 60. I got the asparagus bed cleaned
up & salted & the whole yard rolled. I’ll probably have to mow next week.

I hadn’t planned on starting on my new shooting backstop but, since it’s supposed to be rainy
the rest of this week & most of next, I decided to start putting it together. The whole thing
will be made of beams, poles, & blocks from the old barn. It won’t be pretty but it will get
the job done. I didn’t realize that the beams weren’t level & may or may not shim them level.
The poles are sunk 2’ deep & the beams are 9”x9”x6’. I plan on either have 3 rows 5 high or
4 rows 4 high. I will also set 2 posts at the back. The beams will sit on the blocks to keep them
off the ground & stop dry rot.

This was the 1st time in many, MANY years that I have used post hole diggers & I forgot how
heavy the posts & beams are so I am sure that I will have a lot of muscles screaming & cussing
me tomorrow. I kinda sorta hope it rains tomorrow so I’m not tempted to work on it some more.

Off to a good start George. That should stop whatever you throw at it once it's finished!

I got 2/10" of rain yesterday & another 7/10s today in about 15 minutes. I walked the
property today & it is really squishy with a lot of standing water. The drain in my front
ditch was plugged with the red buds from my maples. I cleared it & the water in the
ditch drained pretty quickly.

Looks like there won't be any work on the backstop for several days as even more rain
is forecast for this weekend & next week.
