Fly fishing the Rio Grande headwaters

Post by RapscallionVermilion »

For a week every summer we rent a small cabin on the upper Rio Grande near the town of Creede, Colorado. This part of the Rio Grande and its numerous tributaries make for some really fine fly fishing. Creede is an old one street mining town from the silver boom of the late 1800s, with a fantastic summer theatre, a handful or restaurants, and two fly fishing shops. Bob Ford, the "dirty little coward" who shot Jesse James, was himself murdered here. Scenes from the Lone Ranger with Johnny Depp were filmed in the mountains above the town.

Here is the upstream view from one of my favorite dry fly runs. It is all wilderness from here on up. No roads for at least three miles.

and here is the downstream view.

This area, like much of Colorado and New Mexico, was hit hard by the bark beetle plague followed by a wide area forest fire in 2013. This year the area has gotten a lot of much needed rain and the forest recovery is underway. Some of the trees survived both the bark beetles and the fire, but not many. It will take a while.

My wife started fly fishing with me last year and she is really enjoying it and catching on quick. I tease her that it's about time. I took her fly fishing on our first date over 30 years ago.

The wild browns in this stretch are hard fighters, beautifully colored, and jump like rainbows.

Beautiful river. Didn't get to fish it but stayed at Freemon's ranch cabins while elk hunting several years ago and sure wished I had brought my fly rod along.

Nice to see quality water that is overlooked by the West Yellowstone bound hordes.
