Looking for Rio Grand Turkeys in Kansas? Advice?

Post by Jlw0170 »

Hey all. My boyfriend has been wanting to do a grand slam for a long time and I want to help get him started on that journey (I am also a lover of turkey hunting). I want to find a place in Kansas to hunt Rio Grand Turkeys. Since we live in Wisconsin and don't know much about the areas and I feel like you can only trust so much on the internet I was hoping for advice on a good guided hunt we could do.

We are NOT fans of fenced in hunts or ones where you sit over a pile of bait while you wait for basically tame animals to walk in.

We want a true hunt (either sit and call or a stalk) where we have a good chance of seeing birds but it's in no way a guaranteed take - I mean can you even call it hunting if your guaranteed to get something? - it took me four years before I shot my first bird Im in it for the chase -

Anyways, advice or shared experiences would be amazingly helpful and appreciated 😁

One guide to stay away from is Kansas trophy whitetails. Went to him about 7 years ago deff had a lot of birds but the owner operator was unprofessional paid for a guided hunt ended up chasing turkeys all over the property as he dropped me off or sat in his truck. Didn’t sit well with me. Good luck.

Great advice. Thank you. Sounds like that type of place in general is not what we would be looking for.

If you don't mind hunting the RiO and Rio hybrid area I can give a glowing recommendation for 5k outfitters.... Wes is a friend spent a spring and fall with him.... He will work his butt off to insure the whole experience is great from hunting, lodging and food is to your expectations...

Is been on both sides the spectrum and I can assure you he is doing it right... If you contact him tell him Tom from Michigan gave you the recommendation

Where in Wisconsin are you? I'm in Waukesha county.
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

Just a short hop away in Walworth co. Mukwonago area.

I hunt on private land up in Shawno co. Place is stupid with turkey so long as the weather is right and your not a complete idiot (which I was my first couple years out) you are in a good place to get a shot at a bird and even then sometimes.

Use ONX or BaseMap? They will show the public property that’s available to hunt. I heard from several who hunted western Kansas and the numbers are down there. Other parts are better

It's only 1 in Wisconsin unless you can get a bonus tag and they get gobbled up quickly.

Not looking for a date or a hunting spot! I've got both!
Just trying to be neighborly. Turns out, we are in the same area.

Just having fun with you! Honestly I'd enjoy more people I can talk hunting with. Btw Shawno co is stupid with turkey if your looking for areas in state for hunting. And I'm seeing more and more turkeys in Walworth too. :)

Ha! Boyfriend's sister and brother in law live up there. Was deer hunting last year in their ground blind, I Didn't see a damn deer but had about 30 turkeys come off the roost right over my head. I didn't have a fall tag otherwise I'd have taken a Jake. It was quite fun watching them meander around the feild and watch the crows pick on them.
