Montana Elk Hunt 2020!

Post by CamoMan4025 »

Well, I completed a bucket list hunt. I went to north west Montana in an area of Plains, MT. It was beautiful country. It was a 5 day hunt, all on public land with an outfitter. I went with my BFF who turned 70 this year. He has been all over the country hunting all kinds of game. I attempted to train prior to this trip, but come to find out, I don't know if I could have trained enough. This country was incredibly tough and that's an understatement! It was basically straight up and down. When we were on the mountain, you could see forever. When you moved to another area, one again you could see forever. It's like the mountains never end.

I learned a lot about elk hunting and elk themselves. We located a few herds, but they were extremely far away. The closest we got to a herd was 750 yards. We turned out losing daylight and no luck there. I had a deer tag which was good for either mule deer or whitetail. I wasn't bothered about killing a whitetail since that's what I hunt in Virginia. I saw some mule deer, but nothing I wanted to shoot. So long story short, I ended up harvesting this 10 point on the last day. I've contradicted myself by saying I wasn't bothered about a whitetail and then ended up shooting one. I guess I got buck fever and got all wrapped up in the moment like a teenage boy on his first date!

Anyway, I had a good time, but super long days.

Kevin

I wondered how you'd done. Sounds like a good trip and that's a really nice whitetail. I've spent a lot of time between Plains and the ID border for work. I've killed some turkeys in that region but not hunted elk there. Glad you ended up with a good buck. Five days isn't a lot of time, so you did good.

Thanks for all the remarks. Here's a few more pics of out there. Like I said, the terrain was incredibly rugged, snow, rocks and fallen trees. Me and my buddy were more concerned with slipping, tripping, twisting a knee or breaking a leg. Our guide scooted up and down like nothing. Hell, I was sweating trying to walk downhill!

I ordered a pair of Zamberlans. I was able to get them at a great discount, so I didn't pay full price. It's crazy how many brands are out there. I got them last year and wore them thru turkey season to really break them in. I have a pair of Under Armour hunting boots that I've worn for years and are extremely comfortable. Before I went to Montana I treated my new boots with waterproof treatment and I wore my Under Armour boots out Muzzleloader hunting. I realized that there was a big difference in the two boots and the new ones are a lot more structured and give me a lot of support compared to the Under Armour. I guess what I'm trying to say is maybe you do get what you pay for. My feet never got wet one day while in Montana. I even walked through a couple creeks and water holes, but didn't purposely stand in water to test them.
