I waited a while to get my first turkey!

Post by derbyacresbob »

Today I got my first turkey, I waited till I was 66 years old to do it! LOL
This was the first time I have had access to private land with turkeys on it.

It took me right at one hour to call this gobbler up to about 30 yards away. I am pretty sure he was over a half mile away when I first heard him gobble.

Almost every time I yelped with my box call he would gobble. After about 15 minutes I could tell he was headed my way. This gobbler crossed two barbed wire fences. It was pretty cool to see him react when he first saw the hen decoy I had set up about 15 yards in front of me.

I used a 3-1/2" Federal Heavyweight 1-7/8 oz #6 shot load and the gobbler dropped stone dead at about 30 yards away. The beard was 9-1/2" long.

It was a great day!

Congrats, Bob! Never to late. It’s a gas pulling them in from that far. Seems like it takes forever for them to get to you. Fun stuff! Looks like a nice one! What state were you hunting?
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?

Way to go Bob! You deserve a nice bird for killing all those coyotes that reduce turkey numbers. I hope it is the first of many more birds you shoot.

Thanks for all the great replies gentlemen!

I really enjoy visiting Gobbler Nation. I have learned quite a bit about reloading bad a$$ shotgun shells on this forum.

Knowing Bob, he probably rolled the coyote that was stalking the turkey at 70 yards on the run with his second shot.

Way to go Bob, glad you got one
