Days 49 & 50 of the 2021 Squirrel Season

Post by HunterGKS »

Day 49 of the 2021 Squirrel Season

I hit “my” deer woods at 09:55 to change the card in my trail cam & do a little bushy hunting before lunch.
It was sunny, blue skies, calm, & 56. Walking in, I spotted a white flag & the haunches going away. Not sure
if it was a buck or doe. This was the 1st deer I have seen in this woods this fall. At 10:27, a fox showed up
but it was too far for a shot. At 10, 48, 1 started chirring behind me. I headed to lunch at 11:00 with the
temp up to 59.

I got back into the woods at 12:55 with a temp of 70 & a little breeze. At 12:03, a fox came out in the hickory
grove where I used to sit. If I was where I stood this morning, I would have had a shot.

At 13:30, a bushy came down a tree in front of me & went right back up into the tops. At 14:17, a red showed
up on the dead falls to my right & played around for several minutes before leaving. This was the 1st red I have
seen this fall which is unusual. I gave it a pass as they are a PIA to clean & don’t yield much meat. At 14:27, a
fox camp down a tree in front of me & ran around for several minutes. It did stop several times & the shots would
have been good if not for the fact that it kept saplings or brush between us every time. It seemed like it knew
what it was doing. It went back up the tree at 14:45 & came back down almost immediately. It moved hither &
yon never giving me a shot. It moved away but came back. I thought I would get a shot but it disappeared. It
either went up the backside of a tree or went away in the undergrowth with no tail flicking at 14:57.

At 15:43, I spotted a fox coming down a tree on my right on the far side of several dead falls. When it went out of
sight, I stood up & got behind a tree hoping it would get into the dead falls & give me a shot. I gave up at 16:00

I headed in at 16:15 with the temp at 68. This was a bad news/good news hunting day. The bad news was that I
didn’t take home a squirrel to clean. The good news was that I didn’t take home a squirrel to clean.

Day 50 of the 2021 Squirrel Season

I had planned on hunting the woods behind the house this morning but someone was already bow hunting so I
headed to the woods where I got a turkey last Thursday,

It was 58, sunny, clear blue skies, & breezy as I was setting up my chair at 10:10. I sit about 30’ from a nice
shagbark & nuts had been falling the whole time. I wasn’t sure if they were falling because it was time for
them to fall or if a squirrel was dropping them. I watched the tree top & a fox moved out on a limb. There
was a loud crack followed by a loud thud at 10:14 & the rest, as they say, is history. 4 minutes, count em, 4,
after I got into the woods. That’s my 2nd fastest time. It was a young female.

At 12:12, I spotted a fox in front of me moving south. I was hoping it would come east but it never did. It was
soon joined by another fox & they headed west into the under growth never to be seen again.

I decided to head home at 15:10 with the temp at 68 still sunny, clear blue skies, & breezy. Probably won’t
make it out tomorrow as I have some outside work that needs to be done if it’s not raining.

Probably 4 but if I'm already in the woods, reach my limit, & another
shows up, my limit just went up.
