Day 16 of the 2021 Squirrel Season

Post by HunterGKS »

I really wasn’t expecting much when I set-up in a friends woods at 13:04, lite breeze, sunny, & 77.
I have hunted these woods twice & didn’t see a whisker. The breeze was blowing leaves & branches
just enough to make the shadows move down low putting my head on a swivel when I caught
“movement” in my peripheral vision.

I sat up in a small grove of shagbarks & oaks about 1’ from a tree with my shoulders even with the
tree. At 13:22, I looked over my left shoulder & a fox had started up a tree a couple of feet. I had
to pick up the .17 from my lap, raise it straight up to move past the tree, & get the x-hairs on his
head. I was a little off & hit him in the neck right behind the head but didn’t damage any meat.
18 minutes is pretty quick.

Nothing going on until 14:36 when another bushy showed up in front of me with a hickory nut in its
mouth. I was just starting to squeeze when it moved & I missed. I must have been really close as it
jumped about 1’ in the air & too off like a scalded squirrel.

I headed in at 16:00, still sunny & breezy with the temp up to 81. It had been pretty nice inside the
woods. I think I may try hunting here some morning.
