Day 4 of the 2021 Squirrel Season

Post by HunterGKS »

Day 4 of the 2021 Squirrel Season

I got set up at 07:00 with overcast skies, a light breeze, & a temp of 60.
Again, the 1st thing I did was fire up the T-cell. At 07:30, a fox started
moving around in the saplings to my left. It popped in & out of view
never giving me a clean shot. It alternated between barking & scolding.
It finally jumped to a large tree in the corner of the woods & started up
scolding as it went. At 07:45, it made the mistake of stopping behind
some leaves but left its head in the open with just enough room to fit a
.17 between 2 small branches. It was a nice female.

I had dozed off &, when I opened my eyes at 08:50, a tiny little fawn
was looking at me from about 15’. It knew I was there but didn’t know
what I was. It practiced its head bob & tried to do the foot stomp but
just wasn’t ready. It got within 10’ & finally decided, at 08:58, that it
needed to be gone & high-tailed it down the trail into the west section
of woods. The breeze had picked up.

At 09:15, I took a walk through both sections of woods looking for squirrel
& deer sign. There were a lot of hickory nuts down in the west section
but no cutting. The east section had a lot of acorns down but, again, no
cutting. Didn’t see any deer sign at all. I got back to my set-up at 09:40.

I headed in for lunch at 10:30 with the temp up to 75, still overcast, &
breezy. The fawn was at the edge of a bean field & took off running to
the north. I didn’t see moms either time I saw the fawn which seemed
rather odd giving the size of the fawn. Hopefully she was just staying
out of sight.

I thought these fungi were interesting looking. I always try to “pose”
any game with natural surroundings & this dead tree/fungi combination
seemed good.

Different woods. Some leaves are already starting to drop.
