20ga Ki-Yi pattern

Post by Hoobilly »

Have had several ask for 2’s to deer and coyote hunt with. I e loaded 3’s for a few customers and needed range time

Took the Retay Masa 20ga turkey model with a 22” barrel and tried factory chokes as I’m waiting on Indiancreek to make me some in more open diameters to test with.

The 585 flush mount Retay choke shot the beat. I’m honestly floored that it’s this good. From all of my patterning I feel the shorter barrels are shooting better than longer barrels.

This is a 1-5/8 90/93 load of Shooters. #2’s at 1150-1190 fps should handle deer at 50 yards

On a deer size animal, would you expect pass throughs at that range with the 3’s? I know it’s probably a dumb question, but look at the source.

When shooting deer do you aim for vitals or head/neck when using shot?

What distance did you pattern at? 40 yards? 50 yards?

On one of the utube videos that "derby acres bob" posted he shot a running quartering away angle coyote at 70 some yds with #3's (maybe #2's)

What impressed me, besides a heck of a running shot, was you can see the pattern of shot kick up dust on a slope that looks to be another 20yds behind the coyote, the pattern looks to be about basketball size even after passing thru the coyote.

Of course a deer is thicker than a dog, but it looks like 8-10" of penetration with #2's would be doable on a deer at 70yds

I think 3’s would do it out to 60 on a deer.

I sid shoot the 600 diameter but it wasn’t tight enough. I need to check and see for sure which is what on the diameters of each choke. I markered them the size and forgot to say which one it was on the patterns.

Probably depending on the situation. If it’s running aim for the front and neck and expect a follow up shot. If a deer was walking slowly I would aim at vitals

Makes sense, I was just curious. I never really knew how it was used exactly, but since we can't use it here, I never really looked into it.

Killed a lot of deer with lead OO and OOO size buckshot, even at 20 yards don't get a lot of pass throughs. The hide seems to catch the pellets on the offside.

I would bet that’s due to lead deforming

Tungsten at 20 yards would be in and out

Ive killed several coyotes with #7 hevi shot out to 60 /63 yds past 50 + yards there may be a trail up job if you inclined to get a picture . with TSS #3 all you would need is 2 thru the vitals or even close and that would be a done deal , dirt knap right there . the trail up on even 60 yard coyotes with the #7 hevis were 50 ysd or less so they had to penetrate both lungs although I did not do a neuroscopy.. This was with a turkey setup in several guns .

Anything tungsten based is bad to the bone.

Can’t wait to pattern the 2X4
