Day 31 of the 2019 Ohio Squirrel Season

Post by HunterGKS »

It was 89 at 01:06 with a clear, sunny sky, & windy when I set up in the same
spot near my deer stand as last week and, like last week, the 1st fox I saw
was at my usual spot at 01:12. It was headed south.

At 01:14, it showed up at the north end of the deadfall in front of me, worked
its way through, ran west, grabbed a walnut, & headed back the way it came.
It stopped on a log & just as I was about to squeeze, it jumped down & went
into the undergrowth & out-of-sight at 01:18.

At 01:31, a bushy showed up on my left but headed away. At 01:34, another
1 showed up on my left & went up a tree never to be seen again.

At 03:18, a huge fox came in from behind me on my right. It went up a tree
& stopped about 20’ up. Just as I squeezed off a shot, it moved & I got a
horrible hit taking out a lot of the left right rear leg. Only my 2nd bad shot
of the season. She was probably the biggest fox I have ever shot.

Almost immediately, at 03:23, another bushy came towards me & jumped
up on the fallen limb in front of me. Again, just as I squeezed, it moved
& the shot took him in the back & blew out the intestinal wall, making it a
real joy to clean, my 2nd bad shot of the day, 3rd of the season, & hopefully
the last. This was the 3rd fox I have killed in exactly the same spot & all were
males. In all the years I have squirrel hunted & the literally hundreds I have killed,
I have never seen 1 with white feet.

I decided that, if I got #3 or 04:00 showed up, I was done. I had a splitting
headache all afternoon & needed to get some Excedrin ASAP if not sooner.

As I was getting ready to leave, I looked towards my deer stand & there was a
fox standing on its hind legs on a blow down. Before I could get a shot, it took off.

It was 90 when I left a little after 04:00. I plan to hunt “my” primary turkey woods
in the morning.

The white went up the inside of its legs all the way to the white on its belly.

I don't think it was Thumper as it was carrying a basket full of colored eggs.

They're getting thin around here as there isn't as much as usual.

You have created a monster in my son, squirrels are now endangered in the yard. He shot a Squigger recently. Please ask HOOBILLY for a pic !
