111 yard coyote HW15 BB

So getting out of the shower this morning, I looked out the window and see a coyote trotting across the back yard. Grabbed the closest gun/ammo that was handy, a 12 gauge Beretta 303 with Improve Modified choke and a couple rounds of discontinued Federal Dead Coyote ammo. Dead Coyote is 1-1/2 oz of HW15 BB with the Flite Control wad, stock #PHC120 BB.

I dropped one round in the chamber and opened the slider. The coyote stopped in front of a large bush and looked my direction. First round knocked him off his feet, second round seemed to finish it a few seconds later. Put my shoes on and trotted out there to pick him up. Trotting through knee high grass, I was getting torn up by hungry flys. Probably should have took the time to put pants on.

Getting back into the house, I pulled out the laser range finder. It was a longer poke than I first thought. An honest 111 yards. Nearly double the distance of my longest shotgunned coyote in the past.

111 yards is a good poke with a shotgun. Dead coyote equals good coyote. Congrats.

Good job.
But how come people don’t get tore up on long shots on coyotes. :drunken: :compress:

That's a poke but I don't doubt it with a BB

Talk about your golden BB. Can't imagine there was much pattern integrity at that distance, and the drop would have been considerable. Impressive performance and good riddance!

X2.

Did you hold over much? I would guess 4 feet or more of drop at that range, but that’s a total guess.

The drop @ 90yds is 2 ft or more, and that is at 1250fps from the muzzle. Pattern at that range is pretty large.

good shooting on that coyote

did you skin it to see how many pellets hit it

Did not intentionally hold over. I've shot paper with those flite control wads at 85 yards and gotten killing patterns without holding high and just a bead sight. Until yesterday, I've never put those on a coyote past 60-65 yards. He was in tallish grass so you could only see the his head. I put the bead at the top of the ears and sent it. He dropped at the shot and didn't regain his feet for several seconds. By then I'd dropped another one in the pipe and took three steps out onto the deck before putting the second one to him. That would make the second round at 108 yards. That one knocked him out of sight. Put my shoes on and went down range where I located him about 5 yards from where I'd last seen him.

Tipped the scales at 28 lbs 4 oz so he was an adult male in good condition. In hindsight, I should have skinned him out to count pellet strikes and location. Being a summer hide, it didn't seem worth the effort. In any case, both shots knocked him off his feet. In all honesty, it wouldn't have been my first choice at that range. I misjudged the range by 20 and that shotgun and ammo was the closest thing at hand when I spotted him.

Pushing the back side of the end zone from the 1 yard line... I don't know if it's repeatable but I won't forget it!

KPY predicts 36" of drop at that distance when started at 1300 fps.

So basically the top of the pattern dropped and fell into the coyote?

on the KPY program how does #3 lead buck compare to Fed. HVWT BB's for penetration and drop at 110 yds?

That is what I believe.

What does KPY predict for penetration at that range?

I misspoke on the drop for HW15 BB @ 110 yds. It is 30", not 36" (misread as HS instead of HW15) with 3.97" penetration (1300 fps).

Lead 3Buck is almost identical with 29.43" of drop and 4.1" penetration (1300 fps).

Thanks. Considering that I aimed at his ears, I'd say that puts most of the top half of the pattern on him. Shoulda skinned him...

Way to go! Great shot!

When I first got KPY I came up with 3.70" of gel penetration to reliably kill or break down coyotes. I had killed lots of coyotes with lead BB shot out to about 45 yards.

KPY showed lead BB shot at 1250 fps getting 3.70" of gel penetration at 43.7 yards. So this is how I decided I wanted to use 3.70" of gel penetration on the coyotes that I shoot around here. On bigger coyotes going with 4.0" of gel penetration maybe a good idea.

The Federal 15g/cc BB shot at 1300 fps shows 3.70" of gel penetration at 115.5 yards.

I still have 4 or 5 boxes of those Fed HW BB 1-1/2 oz Coyote loads. The only thing I didn't like about them was there was only 62 pellets in 1-1/2 oz.

With the Fed HW 15g/cc #2 shot that I robbed from the 3" FHW Waterfowl loads that Rogers closed out quite a few years ago, there are 90 FHW #2 15g/cc pellets per each 1-1/2 oz load. The FHW #2 shot probable won't kill a coyote at over 100 yards away though. LOL

I just loaded 50 TSS #2 shot loads in the Federal Heavyweight 3-1/2" hulls that I robbed the #5, #6 and #7 shot out of. I had 3 different loads tested and the one that worked out the best using the Federal factory power, primer wad and hull was a 2-1/8 oz load of TSS #2 shot. They have 120 pellets in each shell.
At 1230 fps they get 3.70" of penetration at 110.4 yards.

If anybody wants to look at the Precision Reloading test data sheet for these Fed 3-1/2", 2-1/8 oz TSS loads send me a PM with your e-mail address.
