Number 1 hunting tip
Number 1 hunting tip
I was recently asked by a novice turkey hunter what was my best hunting tip gleaned by almost 4 decades of chasing gobblers and without hesitation I told him, "You can't kill them in the bed!" If you're not out there with them, you won't kill squat! I've killed quite a few gobblers just by getting into the woods in an area with birds, setting up comfortably to sleep/hunt w/ my "turkey ears" on, "cutting a rusty", which is a frenzied series of calls on a box, pot, and diaphragm and then just clucking/yelping between naps. When your dog tired, worn out, frustrated and thinking about sleeping in , give it a try, especially in late season when the gobblers are worn out too and cruising mid to late morning looking for a little action.

Brice,
Good hunting in the Black Hills. Stay safe, but most importantly, have a great time and take in all the experience, wildlife, flora and beauty of a really magical area!

Excellent advice. I told my buddy the same thing about a month ago. He picks and chooses the days he hunts. Cold, rainy, tired, hard week at work. If the season's in and I'm off from work, I'm hunting.
Thank you Lord for creating these wonderful birds and allowing us to chase after them.

I use to be that novice not to long ago. The biggest thing I’ve picked up on is after every hunt go back through and make sure you learn something from it. Even the smallest things will eventually play a huge factor in hunting these magnificent birds.
Re: Number 1 hunting tip
Roost ain't roasted, but it darn sure helps. I will sometimes give up an evening hunt and just try and find some birds from a distance and put them to bed. If I do, the next morning I am sneaking in earlier than early for the set up. The morning fly down is magical to watch. If I get a shot, well that is icing on the cake, but I still was part of something that was a hell of a lot better than sleep.

If you hunt in Ohio, don’t hunt where HunterGKS has been hunting.

Same, lol
Re: Number 1 hunting tip
The two things that I always seem to go back to when I'm struggling (all tips work when you're hot), is to hunt where there are turkeys, and be still and ready. When things aren't going well, we all seem to relax our level of alertness and sharpness. You end up getting caught with your gun out of position, or with your pants down. These are the times you have to remind yourself to be sharp.
You can kill a lot of birds by being still, alert and ready.

Yup- just keep getting out of Bed and going out. If it takes me 20 or more days to limit out,I am out there.
Re: Number 1 hunting tip
I have been hunting for 45+ Years. You have to where the turkeys are to kill them. I am fixing to say something controversial and there will be a lot that disagree but going to say it anyway. Turkeys are like roosters they like to make noise in the morning if you don’t hear they are likely not there. Are there exceptions? Yes , if it is extremely cloudy or raining- did coon hunters hunt in the area all night? Did they see you walking in?
Can’t tell you how many times I hear people say they just aren’t gobbling. They were gobbling fine where others were.

Re: Number 1 hunting tip
A few year ago the season was winding down and guys at work were complaining about not killing a bird yet. I offered to take any one of them on an afternoon hunt, but nobody wanted to go. I heard every excuse from too hot, to too buggy, to it's all over........
The next morning I showed up with a freshly cleaned up set of 1 7/16" spurs and a fat 10" beard in my hand. They didn't even want to talk about it.
Persistence. Persistence. Persistence.

Re: Number 1 hunting tip
Scouting and patterning birds is key in my mind. I spend a lot on gas prior to and during the season to scout my spots. I spend a lot of time walking and sneaking around with binoculars. I spend 66.6% of my time scouting and 33.3% of my time actually hunting. Not sure what I do with the other .1%....
