The Loss of a Legend

Post by Hobbes_mobile »

He was a legend to me anyway.

I lost my dad this morning, October 9, 2021. I made it home in time to say my goodbyes and thankful that I made it back to visit with him in August, but quite frankly it wasn't enough. I want more time, I'm not ready for him to be gone.

I know these photos won't mean anything to the folks here but I feel like sharing them.

Dad was born and raised in Western Kentucky then married my mom after returning from Vietnam and built a house across the river in Southern Illinois where he lived until his last.

A grey squirrel riding on his shoulder that he raised.

Dad had three brothers, one older and two younger. The oldest to his right died back in around 2009 from cancer. The two younger ones out front are still here.

Your's truly was born when Dad was 25 and my brother and sister followed when he was 26 and 29.

Dad loved to hunt, fish, and trap. He was a duck hunting machine in the 70s and 80s. In the 90s and 2000s he hunted mostly whitetails and turkeys. In 2010 he killed a cow elk in Colorado with me and acted as giddy as a kid. In 2016 he hunted rooster pheasants with me in Montana. In 2017 he killed his one and only Merriam's turkey with me in Montana.

Dad loved to visit us in Montana but he and Mom had to cancel their trip in August due to some breathing/lung problems that he was having. My wife and I, our granddaughter, and youngest son got to come to IL and visit instead. I'm very thankful that we made the decision to visit then.

Dad loved to shoot but the breathing problems kept him from going alone. My mom had been driving him to shoot at least once a week and setting targets up so he could shoot from a chair beside the truck. I took him to shoot while we were in. He mostly wanted my youngest, Boyd (named after Dad), to get to shoot some tannerite with a rifle and a few other targets with a handgun.

A screenshot of the grin on Dad's face after he'd just shot a container of tannerite.

Sorry for your loss. Those photos are terrific! Man do you ever look like him! Great memories!

I lost my Dad in February of 2012. It was absolutely the hardest, most devastating thing I’ve ever been through. He was my first hero, my most cherished hunting and fishing partner but most importantly my best friend.

I have to agree about the dreams. Craziest thing in the world but it happens to me almost weekly.

I lost my dad October 3rd unexpectedly. We believe it was a heart attack. We really did not understand God’s time for taking him Home but it has been slowly revealed to us. I will not go into my whole story as I do not want to take away from your tribute. I just want to say if you need anyone to speak with then please reach out. I can definitely relate to what you are going through and will be glad to listen. Your family are in my prayers.
