Last Night's Scare

Post by Hobbes_mobile »

Nothing to do with hunting or fishing or camping or camp cooking, but thankful that my 18 year old, Boyd, is not hurt.

He wasn't paying attention in the dark and blew through a T intersection into a mailbox structure (8 mail boxes), a wood fence, and a post that held up a ranch sign. The truck then slid around and the tailgate clipped that big power pole. He's lucky that he wasn't hurt and that he didn't have passengers. He was wearing his seat belt and the airbag went off.

Kayaks, backpacks, and gear were scattered, some that we need to try and find still, but he's in one piece and under our roof now.

This is what's left of my old 2006 Tacoma. I drove this truck all over CO, NW Nebraska, and Montana chasing turkeys and elk from 2008 to 2020 before turning it over to Boyd. She survived a run in with a moose and a mule deer around 2017 and 2018, but she didn't survive this. I'm glad that she gave one last valiant effort and protected Boyd.

Airbags and seatbelts are lifesavers. Very lucky both were available and functioned as designed. Tell him not to do that again.

I have a 20-year-old and a 16-year-old. This is my worst nightmare. I’m so glad to hear he’s OK! The truck did it’s job thank the Lord.

Thanks guys. He called at 1 AM after I'd been asleep a couple of hours and my wife picked up. He was panicking, the horn was going off nonstop, and my wife was barking out orders trying to calm him down. It was just down the road a couple miles max. I got dressed in a couple seconds and took off still half asleep.

I got there right after a couple folks had stopped and a guy was pulling the horn fuse. He could barely get his hand under the crumpled hood to it. The deputies then state trooper showed up a few minutes later.

I probably could have gotten sick after that kind of adrenaline rush from a dead sleep and then realizing how bad the truck looked. I was expecting that he'd clipped a mailbox and ran in the ditch. I wasn't expecting that much damage.

I hate that the truck is done for but really could care less. I was just happy that he wasn't hurt. He kept apologizing and I kept telling him that I didn't give a **** about the truck. I had full coverage so sounds like I'm all good on the truck and private property damage.

The airbag bruised him up some and he's got a knot on his head. He's a tall kid so his knees must have hit the dash some.

Wow! Glad you son was protected as designed. Fortunate not to have hit the concrete pole directly. I had a similar experience with my 2020 Silverado Z71. Head on and had a seat belt bruise. Totaled mine and the other guys old Forerunner. Not lights or seatbelts for him in a driving rain. He got transported I got the ticket for turning into his lane.

Mr. Hobbes, know doubt your faith and beliefs protected him. Everything in life can be replaced, except a Life. As stated, I think it's every parents nightmare to get "that call" in the middle of the night ! Positive thoughts to all involved.

Glad to hear this turned out well for you and your family! Trucks are tools, and tools are easily replaced.
