Who is Moving My Trap?

Post by HunterGKS »

I have had a problem with groundhog(s) digging under my butcher shop on the north & west sides.
I set a leg-hold trap at both holes. Numerous times, both traps have been moved from the holes
without being tripped. I even set 1 trap inside the hole & it was moved to the outside without
being tripped. Yesterday, I setup my trail cam & caught 2 critters at the hole but still can’t figure
out which one moved the trap.

The 1st critter was a bunny & the 2nd was a skunk, I think. I have never seen a skunk that looked
like this 1. The head looks a like a skunk but the only white is on its head. The body looked pretty
big with a bushy tail. Also, I have never noticed the tell tale skunk aroma. It is a skunk, right?

If I lived closer I’d say your number one suspect would be me. But since I live so far away I’d blame the skunk.

Your pan should be about level with the jaws. Trap should be burried at least enough not to scoot around. Will the dog tie out stakes slide off the T posts?

And if you can find a 220 conibear, stake it the same way.

Skunk for sure. As stated use a Conibear otherwise your gonna wind up with a pissed off skunk that you either have to shoot or release. Google skunks and you will be surprised how many different one there are. We have "Bluejay Barrons Skunks " at my deer camp .
Put you plans in the nail scarred hands.

Thx for the input. I especially enjoy the skunk anecdotes.

Tuesday night, the only visitor was the bunny. Yesterday, I decided to pull the trap as
I didn’t want to catch either the bunny or skunk for obvious reasons. I also pulled the
trail cam but, after further cogitation, decided to set the cam up again. I want to see
what might be using the hole as a winter hideout.

I have seen a lot of stripped skunks & some spotted in Ohio, WV, FL, & TX but never 1
that was solid black except for a skull cap. I used to have a camp in WV. The front
door was about 20' from a creek bank with the creek about 20' below. I got up 1 night
to answer call from Ma Nature & walked to the bank. As I stood there, I heard something
towards me & went into statue mood. A stripped skunk walked right past me literally
inches from my feet. It stopped in front of me & kind of looked at my feet. I thought to
myself: "Self, I thought, don't move & maybe it will walk off without spraying." Which is
what happened. I thought this was a 1 & done thing but the scenario repeated the next
night. From the point on, I answered Ma's call away from the creek & never saw that skunk
again.

A friend trapped this skunk back in 2010 & gave it to me. I had it mounted & it is still sitting on top of 1 of my call cabinets.

It looks like I may have a time share under my butcher shop. The bunny seems to be the most
frequent visitor & the only 1 I’m sure went into the “den.” The skunk, a different 1 from the
1st, only showed up once.

The bunny still shows up every day along with 1 possum & a 3rd different skunk.
I pulled the trail cam as I have seen what is using the den & doubt that anything
more interesting will show up.

Thx for the info. Since they haven't really caused any problems & only
show up occasionally & always at night, I probably won't bother with them.
The only critters I want gone are the pasture piggies & I'll work on them
this spring.
