Most Unique Gobbler Killed?

Post by decoykrvr »

Over the years I've killed a variety of "Unique" gobblers ie., no spurs, double spurs, a gobbler w/ a 16" beard, no beards, multiple beards, a 4 bearded gobbler w/ 34" total beard length, blind in one eye, one legged, an old gobbler ripped up and torn by an encounter w/ a bobcat/fox/coyote, a gobbler w/ 4 different shot sizes in him, a gobbler w/ a stick which had perforated his breast through the breast bone and was healing, different color variations on the tail and wings, but the most "Unique" was a 2 yr old which was totally melanistic (solid black) w/ no barring or colors and dark legs and black beak. What are your most "Unique" turkeys?

Killed a gobbler with a Kayak paddle one time.

we were boating on a whitewater creek, saw a gobbler on the shore with a huge chunk of his breast pealed down his front, feathers, skin and muscle.

got out and when up to him and he was standing there just out of it, I guess he went to water like a wounded deer.
felt bad for him and put him out of his misery with the paddle, really nice longbeard too.

I've watched a few cool looking birds flop. And it always seems to be a unique hunt, like unusual things happened during the hunt or a crazy series of events led us to making decisions that concluded with success. The last pic isn't a unique color or anything, it was more of a unique hunt. ImageImageImage

Multibeards from 2 to 7 beards, longest total was a 6 bearded with 56” of beard. Several that topped 30”. A Gobbler with fishhook shaped spurs, a Gobbler with most of his skin and leg scales missing with just bone and tendons showing, a Gobbler that had more beards than tail feathers, a Gobbler that had both wings that had been broken and healed back together, one with a stick in the breast, one full of crawdads, one with one leg, a couple with missing toes, one with about a 6” piece of parachute cord wrapped around one leg, one with three legs. Ok, I made the last one up. But there are probably some more unusual ones that slip my mind at the moment.

I hunted a mountain hollow which had a large shallow, high volume, spring at the base of a ridge. I killed a large soaking wet gobbler near the spring one morning when we had experienced no rain, and when I cleaned him, he had 18 spring lizards and 2 crawdads in his crop. Although I've never seen or killed a three legged turkey, I've killed several w/ missing toes or deformed/clubbed feet and a couple w/ strange beaks.

Nothing too crazy here......no beard, no spurs, one spur, missing toes, melanistic with solid black primaries (son's bird), missing most tail feathers.

I killed one last year that gobbled and strutted and practically ran in after his hens left. He smelled terrible, like I'd opened up his guts, but nothing visibly wrong. I found that he'd been shot through the crop with a broadhead when I started skinning.

My son killed a hen that was more like a gobbler than hen except no spurs. That was pretty unique.

The ones I’ve killed I think are tone deaf and couldn’t tell it was mediocre calling luring them in

I killed one gobbler with double spurs on both legs; and one that had an inch spur on one leg and nothing on the other.

A Melonistic Eastern gobbler that I killes the month NWTF Magazine came out and Lovett Williams said Melonistic gobblers didn't exist this was 2002 or so . gobblers that had been shot by other hunters . But have personally seen Mossyheads that friends killed , Spurless Gobblers , Beardless Gobblers , Coon striped beards , Mature birds with Jake beards , Multiple bearded , multiple spurred , thats all I can think of at this time though .

No spurs, melanistic, but the one that beats all...is the first one that ever came to my calling. I knew better than to eat him cause he had to be sick!

I killed one this spring with only 1 spur. That's all I got.
Thank you Lord for creating these wonderful birds and allowing us to chase after them.

You’ve got to kill a hell of a lot of turkeys to rack up that many oddballs. The only one I’ve killed that was really unique had a solid blond beard. Very brittle and broken off to about 4”

Oddest I’ve got is a Smooth legged, one with a sideways spur, one with a crop filled with with green stink bugs and acorns on March 15th, one with a softball-sized tumor, and one with a broken leg.

Would give a nut for a Smokey gray. Bout to have kid #3 so I’m about done with em anyhow.

Thought I was the only one! I didn't even think about him reading this thread until you mentioned it.

Walking up to him I thought I'd somehow blown his guts out  It was a pretty close shot. Tumor was solid, but kind of soft. Showed it to a couple turkey biologists and they'd never saw anything like it. Didn't seem to affect the bird one bit. He was strutting with a hen and walking normal.
