Isaac's 2020 Montana Merriam's
Isaac and I hunted yesterday. We both had tags good for the area, but he was up first. He's not had a lot of opportunities to hunt the last few years, so hasn't killed a tom since 2015 when he killed one in MT and KS. He's killed 3 jakes since then on short window hunts.
We found this bird strutting in a huge field with 7 or 8 hens. We kept tabs on him through the morning with binos. We called to him some from a long way, but couldn't hear him if he was gobbling. He finally started losing hens around 9 AM. We moved to within 300 to 400 yards (as close as we could get) and started calling to him around 9:30. He was gobbling immediately. He stood his ground for a while but finally followed a lone hen to us with a jake in tow.
My typical video, you can hear gobbling but only see a glimpse of the birds before he shoots. I could see the birds but didn't have the tripod high enough. I need to set it near my eye level, so it sees what I do. I know the block is annoying but there's something in the background that is too recognizable.

We found a small matched set and a dozen morels. We ran into some folks that had a couple big bags loaded with the morels. We should have looked harder.

Excellent! I didn't mind the block at all.
Thank you Lord for creating these wonderful birds and allowing us to chase after them.

Re: Isaac's 2020 Montana Merriam's
The Jake went straight up when he shot and I thought he'd missed the way he jumped up with gun at the ready.
He was trying to see if the Jake was a tom so I could come around and kill it.
Folks in CO and MT have all given me heck for my accent. They assume I'm from farther south than Southern IL, forgetting that I was on Western KY border. It gets worse if I spend much time at home. Every now and then I will notice it myself and think no wonder they ask "where you from" while trying to sound Southern.

Born and raised in northern Indiana. Dad was born in a place called Quicksand Ky. It’s not hard for me to use the lingo. But I make sure I keep my northern accent so not to confuse peopleHobbes_mobile wrote: ↑May 10th, 2020, 9:34 amThe Jake went straight up when he shot and I thought he'd missed the way he jumped up with gun at the ready.

Re: Isaac's 2020 Montana Merriam's
Funny about accents. Growing up in Oklahoma I had acquired a twang that I really didn't notice. Moving to Miami, Florida area after graduate school I kind of lost it, or I thought so. Years later, while checking out at a supermarket line I spoke and the older lady in front of me says, "Where you from?". I said Oklahoma, she replied that she thought so by my accent as she had been born there! My wife says that when we go back and I start conversing with families members it is more prominent when I speak.
