Slate recommendations

I want a new slate but I mainly only use one for clucking and purring and soft yelps. Anybody know a good call for the soft talk?

There’s quite a few custom call makers who will build you a great slate call for a good price. Lon Trice, Hooks, Lonnie Mabry, David Halloran, just to name a few. Left out several other great ones.

Wendell from Lights Out Custom Calls makes some really nice soft calls to cluck and purr on. You can email or call him with your needs. He is very helpful and does great work.

All of the above mentioned are great calls as well.

Second the Lonnie Mabry slate. Mine makes sweet music.

If your looking for a slate call to use primarily for making soft "flock talk", you might want to consider a trough call. IMO, trough calls excelle in making hen sounds which "float" and are harder for gobblers to pinpoint the exact location of the caller.

I've been using a Cane Creek slate for 12 years that is hard to beat

Bunch of folks making solid slate calls. Add Lonnie Sneed, Darrin Dawkins and Ed Jenkins to the above list. But maybe your best bet would be go to a sports show or something and just run a bunch of em. That way you can hear them and find what you want. No replacement for matching up with the "turkey in your head". And don't discount your pre-packaged calls either. They are production so maybe final quality control is a bit less but that doesn't mean good calls can't be found. Open them up and run em in the stores! Most will let you if you ask.

Buy a Darrin Dawkins aluminum pot and a David Halloran crystal mistress. Get loud, really be a turkey. You’ll kill more than you ever did with the soft game.

I agree and I disagree

I hunt a couple states and here on my home turf we don’t have huge tracks of woods. Could be 10 acres or 20. Hardly have a woods that 40 acres Mushroom hunters sometdjsrhots spring hunting pretty easy. Early season you can lay the hammer to them. After the first weekend your actually finding your tactics changing pretty quick. If I need a to tone it down I can soft call with a slate and also with my trumpets

I picked up a Dawkins stoned aluminum last year. It’s an awesome call! I can tone it down or scream with it! If I had to be limited to one pot call this would be the one!

If I was looking for another slate I would suggest a Blackstone or Mad Baron green slate. I also have a Hooks slate that’s great.

For pure turkey sounds it’s tough to beat a Tree Talker from Roger Parks.

I will 2nd the Blackstone green slate, I'm not a huge slate fan but their green slate sounds absolutely amazing.

The best slate I have ever used is a gobbler down call girl. Killed a many a bird with it over the last several years.

I have a glass I like to get loud with. Once in a blue moon when I’m tired I sit in a spot and just soft call for a while that’s the only reason I’m looking for one

I just received a green slate from Mark Cornelius, MAC game calls. It’s incredible, and it might make me sell my Cody world class

Just picked up a Tom Teaser red aluminum pot with a black laminate striker. Tried the striker on the ThunderDome slate VaTurkey gave me. It’s a good striker
