I have recently moved to middle TN from New Mexico. I have had some trouble figuring the birds out on public land here in spring and fall and was looking for advice in locating, habits, etc. I can help with someone interested in public land merriams as well.

If you are anywhere near Murfreesboro, you have turkeys. Just get out there, and they will teach you how to hunt em.

Denny Gulvas has a very good DVD on fall turkey hunting if your starting out, lots of good info on there.
Ray Eye also has a fall turkey DVD that is very good and worth watching.

There is some quality public land in the area. Might depend on how you hunt. Move or sit still and wait em out. Find an area that suits your style. Nothing beats boots on the ground. If you want to kill turkeys you have to hunt in area THAT HAS TURKEYS. LOL!
