Avian X decoys

Post by GSPman »

Anybody have good luck with the 3/4 strut jake decoy from AvianX? On my 3rd strutter decoy leaking from the blow tube and about to tell them to either swap it out or refund me some cash and give me the jake. The strutter works great just leaks

Good luck getting a hold of them. I've sent several emails with zero replies. I've got two that are going in the garbage can.

I don't know anything about these things, but couldn't you spray expanding foam inside and still use them??

These decoys look really good but yes, most of them leak air. My buddy put expanding foam in the one that leaks bad, working great.
They are very heavy and he says they are like blowing a hamster to get air in them. ( I'm not sure how he knows this ) :LMAO:
If I were buying decoys, I would buy Dave Smith decoys, they will take a load of 3 1/2" and work fine.

Complaints about leaking Avians are pretty common. I use a Dakota half strut jake; It's not a blow-up so its a little bulky to transport but works like a charm.

I have an AvianX jake & breeding hen. In the spring of 2015, the jake seem to be deflating. After a mornings hunt, I found that whatever held the stake tube had came out & there was a hole in the top of the deke. I was able to cut a short branch & use it as a stake with the deke sitting on the ground.

I contacted AvianX about repairing it & they said: "Throw it away & we'll send you a new decoy, no charge.", which I had in 2 days. It's hard to beat customer service that good. They are located here in Ohio on the Lake about 1 1/2 hrs from me. I hope to get up there for a visit 1 day.

A little investigation showed that the stake tube had a solid top so I lined it up with the hole in the top of the deke & drilled a hole in it. With a large rubber washer, a screw, & a lot of Goop, I was able to repair the deke. After a little paint touch up, you can't tell I fixed it & it works as well as the new deke. I bought another feeding hen on eBay for cheap & can leave 1 set in my blind & use the other set for other hunts.

You may be able to fix any leaks with Goop or something along those lines.

I have an alert hen from AvianX. I like the decoy, but mine leaked right out of the box. I emailed them and never heard anything. I put some rubber cement around the leak and it seems to be holding well.

Not saying yours is BUT if they are leaking
from inside the stake hole ,and some do ,just squirt a little glue in with the deke

I have no experience with Avian X other than handling them at the sporting goods store, I felt they are too heavy and did hear from hunting friends they leak.

I have some HS strut dekes and like them and they have performed great, however when I first purchased them they leaked. I contacted HS Strut and was told they are designed to leak. I was like "what" they are inflatable! I sealed the Jake decoy around the stake tube with some Marine Rated Caulk, it no longer leaks. The hens I did nothing with and they seem to holding up fine and they are much lighter than the Avain X's.

I know this didn't exactly fit the thread but I thought maybe someone could benefit from my experiences with the HS Strut decoys.

It's always good to know which battles are worth fighting & which are unwinnable. It's the old "agree to disagree" adage which you & I reached several years ago on a couple of subjects.
