Another Savage 220A 20 gauge pattern of TSS 9s.

Post by GLS »

While not as impressive or as even as Hayudog's and CadeCart's patterns, it's a decent hunting pattern. 1 5/16 oz. TSS9s at 40 yards. Factory Full (.590 more or less). 139" in the 10; 185 10-20". Sweet trigger. POI/POA very good; dot is on the otherside. Easier to see holes on the reverse side, the side photoed. I'd hunt with it as is in bright light, but the rear ramp is very fuzzy in these old eyes. It was lowlight misses with rifle sites that steered me to red dots. I shot it Saturday for the first time. I was suprised that when I broke it open, shell was ejected, not extracted. Bought the gun on gunbroker last summer for $150. Eat your hearts out. ;)

Looks like a winner to me. Nice job and great deal on that gun.

Looks good.

Is that a 2-3/4" chamber?

Yes, it's 2 3/4. I should go ahead and open it up to avoid issues with inadvertent ammo swaps.

If you open the barrel up to 3" does it need to be re proofed? I guess if I have it tapped for a sight it would be time to have a 3" chamber and testing done.
I do agree that I have been very careful about 3" shells and carrying a 2 3/4" gun. Real nervous the other morning with my daughter and her 20 with 3 inch shells, and me responsible for keeping it all separate.

Mandatory re-proofing is only the law in the UK. Not so in the US. The 220A can be safely opened to 3". That's only .25" longer. With lab equipment monitoring pressures, Sherman Bell has tested long rounds in short shotgun chambers which demonstrated that shooting longer shells out of a shorter chamber is not the disaster that some have stated. At worst, it may mess up a pattern. However, I would prefer not to be the exception to his testing and open the chamber up. Most people who shoot the 220A for turkeys have lengthened the chamber. I believe Gaswamp has done the same. Gil

I have considered lengthening my chamber to 3" on my 220A and lenthening/polishing cone. But, the 2-3/4" 1-5/8oz. recipe does just fine in my gun. I took two birds this season and my uncle took one bird with it. For me, even though the 3" is tempting, I dont see the need to spend the money on barrel work on my 220A.

But, it is nice to see 220s come out of the safe! A friend on mine was able to find two 20ga 220s and one 16ga 220 at a gunshow and he snatched them up quick! They really are nice guns.

Based on the factory choke performance on the 20 gauge guns, I just purchased a 220B 3" .410. I hope to have testing results in the near future.

look forward to the tests. .410 220's are scarce and the 28ga 220's are rare.

Hmm. A .410 ..... If only I could finish the projects I've started. Not sure I'm looking forward to seeing your results- they keep costing me money.

Good to know.

My 220 has been on 5 hunts and is still looking for a shot. Season ends today for guns in California- looks like out of state or next year.
