16 gauge choke question
Okay guys,
Just looking for opinions here. Nothing more. I am getting ready to put together my Remington 870 16 gauge 23" barreled TSS slinger here soon.
Had the gun for a few years now, just haven't had the time to get it done. It is a factory threaded Remington 870 16, hard to find now. I am going to handload a 1 3/4 ounce load of TSS 9s in this gun, and want an opinion on which choke you guys think will be best?
I know Brice is potentially going to work with Indian Creek for a choke for the 16 gauge remchokes, but I am excluding them right now.
I also checked with Pure Gold but they want more than I want to pay for a custom choke as well.
The three options I am looking at is:
Trulock non ported .610 turkey choke
Comp n choke Turkey .615
Colonial arms Elite ported turkey choke in .625
Which out of the 3 would you guys start with? Just curious. I'm leaning towards the .625. It will kill further than I will probably need to shoot, but curious what everyone thinks. Give me your opinion.
Thanks!

Re: 16 gauge choke question
Compnchoke. I’ve been told the internals of the colonial choke, in general are trash, meaning they don’t shoot good patterns.
My second would be Turlock.
My second would be Turlock.
Re: 16 gauge choke question
I like the comp n choke. It patterns lead and TSS very well out of my gun. I don't have any numbers or pictures for you, but I have never felt I was lacking with it. It's a great all around choke. TSS was tight and even and lead 5s and 6s were great hunting patterns at 30 yards.

This should help your decision. I also shoot the 16 ga 870 w/ 23" barrel. 1& 9/16 oz.
Get there early, stay late, sit still and don't use weather as an excuse to stay home.

Re: 16 gauge choke question
I shoot the same gun with apex TSS loads. I have 2 trulock chokes, .610 ported and extra full .630 non ported. The .610 ported did 285 in the 10" with #9's and 244 with #8s. The extra full .630 put up 246 in the 10" with #9's and 185 with the #8's. Mind you thats just one shot each with clean barrel. Ive hunted and killed with both chokes and loads and both have been able to reach out there. I think if indian creek comes out with a .615-.620 choke itll be just the ticket.

What payload are you shooting? 1 9/16 or 1 7/8 ounce?Strutbuster935 wrote: ↑May 12th, 2021, 4:56 pm I shoot the same gun with apex TSS loads. Re: 16 gauge choke question
Im shooting the Apex 1&5/8 oz loads. With the .610 choke the #9 pattern is a great overall hunting pattern. I dont count 20" patterns but it had good coverage. The .610 with #8 is probably too tight, putting nearly 60% in the 10" and not great 20" coverage. I used and hunted with the extra full .630 for 2 years and it did the job and had to reach out there on one of the shots, but I got to chasing internet pattern #'s so i got the .610. I'd like to step up to the 1&7/8 oz load, but honestly not sure 1/4 oz more of shot is worth the extra $5 per shell. Hopefully i can get my hands on an indian creek if they make some.VALongbeard wrote: ↑May 12th, 2021, 7:27 pmWhat payload are you shooting? 1 9/16 or 1 7/8 ounce?Strutbuster935 wrote: ↑May 12th, 2021, 4:56 pm I shoot the same gun with apex TSS loads. Re: 16 gauge choke question
In a month or so I will be taking my compact youth 870 16 to Indiancreek for chokes to be made for it
There will be extra produced so once I drop it off I’ll make a post here for special orders

Re: 16 gauge choke question
Working on a 870 16 gauge project currently, with the help of flopping tom. My barrel is threaded tru choke and I have been shooting 605 and 615 comp n choke. Still haven't got patterns where I want them. Ordered 600 and 610 comp n chokes to try- will have them in a couple weeks. Comp n choke has been excellent to deal with.
Re: 16 gauge choke question
I love Comp n choke and only ever shot their xxx choke in my Benelli 12. Maybe I will give them a try if the trulock doesn’t work. I have a .600 trulock but I just figured I would see what folks had good luck with.
