Benelli compact 20
Benelli compact 20
Shot the factory full choke at 40 yards yesterday. Two targets at 40 yards with 1 5/8 oz #9 tss. 340 in 10” on one and 333 in 10” in the other. Most of the entire pattern was 14” diameter. Is this common with factory full? I got rained out and couldn’t shoot the modified choke to see what it would do. I would prefer a bit more forgiving pattern, but not too open. 18 to 20” at 40 would be ideal. Any ideas on what I should expect from a factory modified choke?

Re: Benelli compact 20
I haven’t seen that many factory chokes shoot like that
Won’t know about the mod until you try it

I have an Affinity (almost the same), and I dropped down to .575 Jebs to get to 290 in the 10”@ 40 yards using Federal 3” 1 1/2 ounce #9s. I had tried .562 Sumtoy (300+), .565 Jebs (360+), .570 Jebs (360+), and settled on the .575 for even hunting pattern near and far....
Re: Benelli compact 20
Thanks gentlemen. Gonna try to shoot again next week. I may be the only turkey hunter I know using a modified choke in a 20ga to turkey hunt

Re: Benelli compact 20
I doubt your factory full choke is a true full. I have factory chokes from different
manufacturers that aren’t close to what they should be, but if it shoots a pattern
you like it doesn’t matter what it says it is.
The only way to be sure what you have is to measure the difference between
the bore and choke. I never trust what is marked on the choke.

Measure twice and shoot as many as it takes,..how did the modified choke work.
Re: Benelli compact 20
Been busier than usual. I’m in the fireplace business. Haven’t been able to shoot the modified choke yet. I’ll try to update maybe this weekend.

Re: Benelli compact 20
Shot the modified choke this weekend. A 40 yard shot would be the limit. Put the full choke back in and shot at 20 yards. Grapefruit size pattern at best. Not sure what direction I’ll take from here. I’m leaning back toward my old 12ga over/under. Is shot a pretty amazing pattern at 60 yards with a pure gold .670 and 2 oz 9s. The top bbl with IC choke was basketball size at 20. Even I can hit a turkey with that one. Top bbl shoots high and bottom bbl shoots low though. I’ll have to figure that out.

Re: Benelli compact 20
I shoot a .587 Carlson’s duck hunting choke out of mine. I like the fact that it’s a lot more forgiving.
Re: Benelli compact 20
My Super90 Montefeltro likes a Trulock .585, forgiving in close but Still plenty of pattern
left out to about 50 yds.

Re: Benelli compact 20
I will try something in the .585 range and see what I come up with. I hate to completely abandon the 20ga, but dang - after shooting the 12 at 60.......I’ll try to post a pic.

Re: Benelli compact 20
DD that looks much better than mine. I’ll have to try the Trulock .585. Thanks!
