NEIL COST SIGNED BUTTERNUT BOAT PADDLE CALL . FEEDBACK IS WELCOME

Post by Sterling » May 12th, 2021, 2:53 pm

I have a very rare, Old Butternut Boat Paddle Call and Leather carrier call signed and numbered by Neil Cost no longer for sale. Feed back is welcome.

I initially posted this for sale because I thought Neil Cost was the maker. It was a gift purchased at a NWTF event in Lexington SC.
I was not aware that Neil Cost signed his name on other makers calls. Did he do this often?
It is no longer for sale until I can determine the maker and value.
One reply feels like it is a Mann.
Does anyone have any idea?

Neil Wrote the following on the paddle;
“THIS OLD BUTTERNUT BOAT PADDLE LOOKS AND SOUNDS SO GOOD THAT I CAN HARDLY TELL IT FROM ONE OF MY ORIGINALS. I CRAFTED MY FIRST PADDLE CALL IN 1978 AND I DO BELIEVE TO THIS DATE THE RASPY SOUND WILL DRIVE GOBBLERS CRAZY. I LIKE THIS ONE SO MUCH I GIVE IT MY PERSONAL SIGNATURE”

Thanks. I did look at the Mann calls and it does look like a Mann.

Yes, it is a Dick Kirby made call. Made for NWTF banquets auction in 1996 I believe. I think the d severalturkey stamp on front is a Dick Kirby addition as well. You should be able to find it on the web. Occasionally one shows up on Quaker boys calls for sale site. Chris’s Kirby would probably know all the details. I have a couple of them and desperately hope they are worth $2500 each. Lol! But $300 is likely more realistic.

Here is one I have. Interestingly if you look at the knot in the lid under Neil it looks like it may have come from the same board.

Here's a rare "square cut" paddle call made by Neil in 1981. I no longer own it. Gil

Well I could spend hours typing and talking about these calls, but in a quick review. I made these calls while I worked for Quaker Boy. We made 2 sets of Neil Cost Limited Editions. One was for 850 pcs that one call was sent to each banquet. They could use it in a verbal auction or could be used in a silent auction. Each banquet could use it how they felt they would generate the most money, now those lids were silk screened with all the same saying and Neil signed the lid. The Next one was a limited Edition for 150 calls. Those were sold in the NWTF magazine in conjunction with 150 Gibson box calls that I made as well. Now both of the Neil cost were signed by Neil but they were not made by him. Sorry to tell anyone who has one of these and thought they had a original Neil Cost.

Whistlemaker,

THANK YOU!!! for the great information and thank everyone for their input.

Sorry for the delayed response. I haven't logged on for a while, imagine my surprise.

My brother and I bought this for our father for a fathers day present at a verbal auction in Lexington SC around that time, 1996. I think we paid around $400.00 at the time. All this time we thought it was made by Neil. I am glad to know the origin of this call!!

Dad loved to turkey hunt, wouldn't miss a season at all. He used it for years and it was his favorite . He brought in a lot of big gobblers with it.

Unfortunately, Dad passed away several years ago. I am sure that Neil set him straight on who made the call when they met.

Best of luck to everyone this year and much success on your hunts.
Stay safe!

Thanks again
