Re: Bugging Me!
16 ga AYA SxS. Its a light upland bird gun really. I mainly use it for hunting ruffed grouse in the thick woods of N Wis where the shooting is very fast. You rarely get a shot past 25 yards the woods are so thick. Just wanted to try and get a turkey with it for the heck of it. Max range was 25 yard...

That's quite a chunk of lead. I'm guessing you could kill anything on the planet with that slug at appropriate distances.

Other worldly. Hard to believe what you have done for the 20 ga. Maybe you should send a link to that thread to NWTF.

Re: how often do you kill one standing up?
I only remember one that I killed standing upright. But I killed one after easing up on two knees and three kneeling on one knee, but stretching up as far as I could. None of those shots are very steady and amount to shooting offhand. The rest, my bottom was firmly planted on the ground or a chair o...

Re: type of deer hunter you are?
All the above. I put half dozen in the freezer most years - we eat a lot of venison. I don't shoot yearling bucks. I try not to shoot 2&1/2 y.o.s. I usually kill several does with crossbow and ML, and then hunt for a big one with a rifle. Consequently, some years I don't kill a buck, and that's ...

Re: Staying in Shape for Bird Season
Exercise bike 6 days a week and weights 2-3 days a week except during grouse season, then nothing else is required. At age 51 and with two artificial heart valves, I want to keep doing what I love (hunting), so I work hard to stay in as good a shape as I can.

Re: need your help aaaaaaagain
Ma, I shot those shells for a few years from my 1187 with a Rem HS .675 tube. It averaged 135/10 @ 40. Killed every turkey I ever shot at including two at just over 50 yds. However, that pattern was out of gas at that distance (75/10"), so your .680 will likely be a 40-45 yd choke. If I were go...

Re: Stand Locations ?
Some of both. Have a couple 21' ladders that are a pain to move. They overlook an apple orchard/ clover plot and a Chestnut grove and are permanent. There are certain funnels that I always hunt, saddles, creek crossings, etc. But I move around alot to chase food sources as well, e.g. a hot persimmon...

Re: Gun Oil: My Pick and Reasons Why
Got mine right away - sooner than I expected. George said he thought it would work great for the cams, trigger, etc. on a crossbow. He didn't say whether he thought it would make a good rail lube. I did use it on my 12 ga 1100 (after thorough strip and clean), and it cycled 4 boxes of 7/8 oz light r...

Amen...God is good. Congrats on the new addition. I remember when our little man was born. His big sister was only 14 months older, but how she enjoyed helping with him. They're 21 and 22 now and still best friends. What a blessing.

Lock-ons usually 15-20', preferably in good cover. With climbers I will often go as high as 25' to get out of the deer's line of sight. I'm really not mad enough at them anymore to go any higher.

Head down so the blood drains from the hams, which are better quality meat IMO than the shoulders and neck.

I never intend to own a shotgun with less than a 26" barrel with the possible exception of a home defense gun. All my repeaters are 26", my doubles are 28". I use all my guns for wingshooting as well as turkey hunting, and longer barrels outshoot shorter ones for wingshooting hands do...

Re: Virginia to get its first Cabela’s
Good to hear. I live in WNC so can get to Bristol easily and won't have to pay sales tax online. I used to buy a ton from Cabelas. Their customer service is great, but as many have said, their prices are no longer competitive. I buy a lot now from Sportsman's Guide. Their optics pretty much suck, bu...
