Re: New Turkey Gun Sight- which do you prefer?????
I have tried EVERY type of turkey hunting appropriate sight you care to name from a Swampfox Kingslayer to a Truglo red dot, to a Sig Romeo 5 RD to a Vortex Spitfire, to Leupold VariX-II 2-7x33. IMO/IME nothing beats a good red dot IF they will work with your eyes (no starburst effect) but be sure t...

Re: Barrel length
My .2c worth. Bare in mind these were MY results using three different shotgun types all 12ga some 3" most 3.5". I was shooting and patterning turkey specific shotguns back in the very early 90's after I got permission to hunt private land with an excellent population of turkeys on it and ...

How you all covering your red dots in the rain?
Have 3moa Swampfox Kingslayer's on two of my now 4 dedicated turkey shotguns and hunted last year in a very light more of a misting rain and the precipitation rendered my sight pretty much useless unless I wiped it off. Was wondering if anyone came up with a solution besides using the plastic cover ...

Re: Going to take the T$$ plunge choke recommendations please
Forget the "maximum range " performance and learn to call the birds into definite killing range. This "long range" marketing hype is the worst thing which has happened to turkey hunting and has probably resulted in more cripples and non-retrieved birds than kills. Of all the bir...

Re: Going to take the T$$ plunge choke recommendations please
I've tested a lot of chokes and loads but not as extensive as others. What I've found is Indian Creek will have the tightest core patterns and Jebs patterns will likely be the close to same size (may be smaller) but have a more even distribution. I agree if you're not handloading try Fox Trot ammo....

Going to take the T$$ plunge choke recommendations please
Going to fallow the advice of those here and give Foxtrot TSS a try. Am looking for maximum range performance. I have a 12ga 3.5" Remington Express with a 24" barrel and a 3.5" Benelli Super Nova with a 24" barrel. Looking for choke recommendations for both guns. Right now both h...

Re: Rem. 870 Express 12 ga. Super Mag
Gil, I get a great pattern with Longbeards out of a Carlson's Ciro Plus .665 "Long Beard" choke ;) I get great results with a .660" Carlson's LB choke out of my RESM 12ga 3.5" 2 and 2.125oz #5's of WLBXR shells. Also did as well with IC BD strike .665" choke. Only reason I ...

Re: How to measure the ID of a choke
Remington XF should be .687 Coincidently that is what my Remington XF actually measures. So based on that I am going to say as long as there is no porting or similar extension on my turkey chokes as is the case with my factory chokes, I should be able to get an accurate ID reading using my venire c...

How to measure the ID of a choke
I have factory XF chokes for all three of my 870's, five in all, two of which are actually labeled as "XF turkey" and I have an factory full choke for my Benelli SN. None of their ID's are on them. I only own a dial calipers and a venire caliper. Obviously do to the limited reach of my ven...

Re: What is considered a good pattern density?
That 835 i had was just plain abusive, that was pre hevi shot days and the patterns compared to the recoil were pathetic! Just shot my 835 last week along with my BSN and REM/EXP/SM and yes it does get ones attention. I hate to say it with every type of shell I have tried my BSN shot the most dense ...

Re: What is considered a good pattern density?
Yes, I would think .660 is a bit too much constriction. My ST .675 does 58%/10 with 9s in the "long range" barrel of my Beretta (.722 bore) and a Rem HS SF .675 does 50%/10 with 8s in my Rem 1187 (.729 bore). A lot of people are happy with an IC .665 in the 12 gauge. Top Thank you for your...

Re: What is considered a good pattern density?
Get some 1 5/8th oz. loads from Foxtrot, patterns will be plenty and you won't get beat to death! Thanks for the advice. For me though recoil has never been a factor. No I do not find great enjoyment from shooting 12ga 3" or 3.5" turkey shells, but when I tire of hard recoil shooting from...

Re: What is considered a good pattern density?
Thanks for the replies. I asked because my friend let me shoot one of his 12ga 3" 2oz #9 TSS shells from my Benelli Supernova with a Carlsons Long Beard .660" tube and I got 398 pellets in a 10" circle at 41 yards. Makes me wonder how good the pattern could be if I used a more TSS fr...

Elk call for locating shock gobbling
Was wondering if anyone has ever used an elk bugle as a locator call to get toms to shock gobble? I am wicked good at doing a three notes of an elk bugle and are going to for this year try out the longest highest pitched part of the elk bugle as a shock gobble locator call for trying to find mid to ...

most comfortable warm weather rubber boots
Spent the day chasing turkeys with my best friend in an area that had a LOT of rain for over a week now and was rather surprised as this area which has always been mostly dry despite past years of heavy rain was quite wet and I spent about 30% of my time slogging through standing water. My Gore-tex ...
