Re: Turkey Hunting Public Land
You can sometimes get lucky on public land. But, I agree it can be frustrating.

Re: Calls that seem to work when nothing else will
Right I've called in some birds with just a wingbone. They seem to like it .dustyroads wrote: ↑February 23rd, 2024, 10:46 am I have been liking the wingbone and cane yelper. It's different tone seems to be super effective on birds that haven't heard it alot.

I've made mostly pot calls. Most have sounded good. I've probably made around 12 to 15. Sold a few to friends and coworkers. As far as I know, they were satisfied. I'm not a professional at all. Just a hunter.

I've never used a push call. I had a neighbor that did though. They have a unique sound. Believe me, he used it a lot.

Re: Lonnie Sneed
I'm sure they're good calls but, anybody with a little bit of skill and time can make calls probably just as good. And then, you have a call you made yourself. Awesome right? All my calls except for the diaphragms are ones, I made myself. I gave away all the ones I had bought.

Re: Aging gobblers
No accurate way after they are no longer a jake. Right, I killed one about 6 years ago that had scaly legs and feet. I don't know if this was an age thing or what. He looked normal and healthy otherwise. He weighed 20 lbs. And had 1" spurs. He was very smart too. Probably the hardest bird I've...

Aging gobblers
:struttin: I've often wondered about the age of birds that I've killed. Everything you hear and read says a 2 yr old will have a beard about 5-8" and short spurs of around 1/2- 3/4". 3 yr olds 1" spurs and 9- 10" beard. I read an article once from Missouri, about 2 birds that wer...

I've made several wingbones over the years but, not any trumpets. I keep saying I'm gonna get a wood lathe sometime.

Re: Range Estimation
I can't estimate range worth crap when I'm sitting down but, once I stand I'm much better. I shot one once at what I thought was 40 yards max. But, when I stood up it looked farther. I made 60 long steps back to the tree I was sitting at.

I use them occasionally if it's in a open woods or field situation. But, mostly don't bother with them.

Re: Calls that seem to work when nothing else will
whatever call I choose to carry on a given day. Im one of those weirdo, extreme minimalists and nowadays only carry a mouth call and 1 other(typically a cane yelper). Ive heard all my life that you should carry multiple calls for an array of sounds but have never noticed any benefit to carrying mor...

Re: Easterns this Spring
They've moved our starting date back here in Tn. It opens this year on April 15th. They are hoping more hens will be bred. I hope it makes a difference but, I don't think it will make a huge difference. I've not killed a gobbler in the last 2 seasons.I'm not hurting the population any.

Re: Calls that seem to work when nothing else will
On days when I can't get a gobble, a wingbone works good. I got one that I made from a Jake wing. A little smaller inside diameter. Seems to work good.

Calls that seem to work when nothing else will
I' ve ran Into times when the birds don't want to hear a diaphragm, slate or box but, will answer a scratch box or wingbone. I don't know if I really believe birds get call shy. Maybe they do.

Re: Anybody made a copper surface call?
I need to make another. It was a nice looking call and had a sound that the birds liked sometimes. I made an aluminum with glass soundboard once, in a nice Red Cedar pot. It sounded good but, I gave it to a friend.

Anybody made a copper surface call?
Just wondered if anyone had made one of these.
I did one years ago with poplar pot and acrylic soundboard. But, I lost it.
