PODCAST -- Closing the Deal

I got out this morning and got some audio for my first podcast of the year. This was at the Honey Hole. I had a tree full of hens to my left and a tree full of gobs to my right. It took about a half hour for everyone to come together and make things happen, but Mister Gob got the deal closed. It was...

Moose Nails a Whopper

The Shamanic Dream Team is sweeping SW Bracken County KY clean of birds. Moose and Remnar were out this morning at the new blind at Dead Skunk. Moose had one come in to 25 yards before putting him down. It had inch-and-an-eighth spurs. This was Remnar's first turkey hunt. He's blown away. More Pics ...

The End of the Garbage Pit Bandit

I missed a gob early and then went out to another pasture. It didn't take long for the Garbage Pit Bandit, one of my long-time nemeses to make a showing.

Re: PODCAST: Another Galloping Gobbler

If you tried yesterday to listen to the podcast, and couldn't, you might want to give it another try. When I got home last night from the farm, I found the site was AFU. I contacted support and it seems to be back up now.

PODCAST: Another Galloping Gobbler

Enjoy. I was out this AM, having a fairly boring morning. This gob came at me from 400 yards away and nearly ran me over.

PODCAST: A LIttle Bit of Everything

I finally was able to get enough material for a podcast Saturday morning. There's lots of gobblers, hens and crows. Enjoy!
Podcast: A little Bit of Everything

I've been trying since February, but this is the first time the turkeys have made themselves available.

Re: Number 1 hunting tip

+1 on hunting vs. couch surfing +1 on hunting where they are and not where they aren't +1 on tactical napping What got my hunting success turned around was: 1) Throwing out everything I'd read and heard about turkey hunting from other people and learning to observe for myself. That led to. . . 2) . ...

Re: 2021 Spring Hunting Plans

I'll open up Turkey Camp in a few weeks. I'm waiting for a weekend without rain and a high of 50F. Sometimes that's late Feburary. I've seen it go as far as the last weekend in March. From then until the start of season (this year it's 4/17) I spend as much time as possible in the field with my reco...

Re: Patience kills turkeys

I was a run and gun hunter for nearly 30 years. In 2008 I changed my tactics. This was due to losing a bunch of land to hunt. I had small parcels left and sitting around and being patient was the best option. I wish I would have figured this out 30 years ago but sitting in one spot and being patien...

Re: Patience kills turkeys

I am a rare turkey hunter. In fact, I don't know any other turkey hunter who's pulled off what I've done. I got laid off in 2008 and didn't go back to work for a couple of years. One thing that meant was that I had the whole turkey season to hunt any way I saw fit. I've got 200 acres in the Trans-Bl...

Re: Beginner's Guide

I've been down with the COVID for the past 10 days. However, the 4 installments were already in the pipeline and auto-published on my weblog even though I was bed ridden with fever. Yikes! I'm weak. I'm strung out, but at least I'm back in the saddle. I got on the weblog and found out y'all must hav...

Re: ISO CHEAP Out of state hunt

Try the Ohio Power Lands over by McConnelsville. There are plenty of gobs. You go to the OPC office and pay a nominal fee and get free run of the place-- campgrounds, and other facilities. Bring your bass rod too. The little ponds are full of big bass.

Beginner's Guide

I'm bringing on an apprentice at Turkey Camp this year. He's a 28-yr-old complete newbie. I figured I'd set down my thoughts on what to get and what to do, and share it with y'all. Here is the first installment. If I Were the New Guy at Turkey Camp Part I I've got several parts already written. More...

Bringing on an Apprentice

It's been a decade since I took on an apprentice turkey hunter. That was my buddy, SuperCore. Old age and a bum ticker got him out of the game a couple of seasons ago. My sons goaded one of their friends from high school into the sport. He's been invited to Turkey Camp this year. He's 28. He's never...

To Get Y'all in the Mood

One of my favorite things to do before season is to go out and gather audio of turkeys in the wild. I then go back home and turn it into podcasts. Here''s an example of one. I use it as the alarm on my smartphone. It's just a morning camped-out at my favorite listening post with hens and gobblers ro...

Re: Cracking the code to a strut zone gobbler?

First off, I am dying to see how this story turned out. Second: Cut N' Run, don't I know you from the T&TH site? Third: If this is who I think it is, then you'll know that I almost killed myself going after one of these Great White Whales years ago. The short version is I found a gob strutting o...

Greetings from The Trans-Bluegrass

I just found this forum, and I thought I'd pop in and say hello. I am the patriarch of a deer/turkey camp in the Trans-Bluegrass of Kentucky-- more specifically in SW Bracken County. When I'm not being a bit jockey, I'm writing for the outdoors. I used to be a pro-staffer, but I never claimed to be ...
