Re: Winchester model 12

I got my first Model 12 as a Christmas gift from my parents back in 1946 when I was 14 years old. I still have that gun but don't use it any longer. The stock is oil-soaked and there's no bluing left but it invokes scores of fond memories. It's killed cottontail rabbits by the score along with ruffe...

Re: WHATZUP WITH THESE TOMS

You guys may be right about coyote predation. We have plenty in our area and have noticed some toms with tail feathers missing which could be an indication some predator is harrassing them. Wild turkeys, like all wildlife, have a reason for everything they do. Trying to get inside their heads for an...

WHATZUP WITH THESE TOMS

As I age I've had to cut back on my turkey hunting exploits. Only hunt my home state now and have 2 different spots. I've been hunting my son's property for at least 20, years and have have always killed at least one turkey there and sometime two.....until this year. Opening day we listened to sever...

Re: Decoys

Several years ago I switched to a Dakota semi-strut jake decoy that I use in combination with an Avian lay-down hen and have lost count of the number of toms that have come in intent on "beating the stuffing" out of this thing. I'm sold on the Dakota jake and it'll save you some bucks besi...

Re: Too Tight

Thanks guys for your helpful comments. JRMCC made a good point too. At 87 years of age my senses are indeed deteriorating. But, I hate to give it up; I'd truly miss the thrill of the hunt and would have a difficult time adjusting to store-bought burger in place of venison and wild turkey breasts. So...

Too Tight

Sometimes "too tight" is a good thing, but I'm convinced that is not the case with my turkey gun. For several seasons I've been striving to tighten up the pattern of my 835 with the use of heavy shot and various tubes, and I finally have a killing machine at 50 yards. However, this past se...

Re: hearing enhancement

I completely lost hearing in my right ear many years ago and hearing with my left ear is sorely deficient. I could not hear most gobbles and even when I did I had no sense of direction with only one ear. But, I invested in a Walkers Game Ear many years back; a remarkable device and still going strong...

smoke-phase tom

20170417_165338_resized.jpg [/img] This tom was hanging around last Spring not far from where I hunt. I think it is a so called smoke-phase eastern. If so, they claim this is a genetic abbe ration that occurs in one of every 100 birds...almost always hens. So, I guess this tom is a pretty rare bird....

Re: 835 ulti mag

I shoot an 835 w/ hevi-shot tube and #6's. Added a LIMBSAVER AIR TECH recoil pad which helps some and also a TRU-GLO peep sight which puts me right on target, even as close as 20 yards. Shot one at 18 yards this year....no problem as long as you draw a fine bead.

Re: flocked-up toms

Thanks guys...I appreciate the info and advice which I will consider as I continue my pursuit. Who knows....if "soiltester" is right I may just hang the BOSS. One thing for sure, though....I'll try talking to the boys with loud clucks and some yelps thrown in. That's worked for me before b...

flocked-up toms

Hey guys....I need some help. Hunted during our opener and had a great morning. Several gobbles at daylight but were all henned-up at flydown. Decided to wait things out and called in and killed a nice tom at 9:15 AM. Text book stuff. Went out again on April 29, to a different location. Again had go...

Re: 30 Hunts in 30 Days

I'm 85+ years old and my "run and gun" days are over. Thanks to blinds and decoys I can still hunt turkeys, enjoy the sights sounds and smells of the Spring woods and kill a tom from time to time. All you young'uns out there who frown on this set-up take note: the clock is ticking and your...

Re: Avian X decoys

Complaints about leaking Avians are pretty common. I use a Dakota half strut jake; It's not a blow-up so its a little bulky to transport but works like a charm.

Re: Hen with just 1 poult.

Turkey poults have many predators...most of which are controlled somewhat by hunting and/or trapping. Not so with birds of prey. To the best of my knowledge they are fully protected. My son had 2 hens with a group of 15 poults on his property this spring and watched the poults reduced from 15 to zer...

Re: Garden Results 216

I love tomatoes......unfortunately here on Cape Cod the sandy soil supports little except siverleafs and weeds. I've tried amendments, container gardening and raised beds, all with limited success. I did get a good crop of garlic this year and am picking some nice egg plant but my tomato crop is pat...

Re: Grandpa's old Model 12

Great story...great gun. I'm pushing 85 and have owned several Model 12's over the years. I'm probably prejudiced but believe it was the best shotgun ever built. I can honestly say that I've fired thousands of rounds through these guns and never had a misfire or a jam. My first shotgun was a 16 ga M...

Re: 835 Problem

I usually strip my 835 down and clean all the components in solvent every 3 or 4 years. They do get dirty and work a lot smoother after a good cleaning and lubrication. I've read in a couple of places that the chambering problem may also be related to a build up of plastic residue. Some say this prob...

Re: Gobbler Cluck

Last Monday about 10:00 I started hearing some loud gobbler clucking; tried yelping and cutting but the bird(s) would not budge so started to mimic the clucking. About 5 minutes later 2 big toms came in and commenced to beat the stuffing out of my Dakota Jake decoy. Watched the show for a while then...

Re: 835 Problem

I bought my 835 about 20 years ago ( 1996 I believe) and it never malfunctioned until this year. During this period I've never made a special effort to clean the chamber so can understand how a long term build-up of crap could eventually lead to ejection problems. A 12 ga wire brush designed to clea...
