Re: Not a Bad Start
We decided to drive home instead of camping another night, so we spent the rest of the afternoon driving. We could have killed one more each, but I didn't want to use my general tag until I can hunt another area that requires the general tag and Boyd likes his bed. I'll probably take him out locally tomorrow evening.
Started the day without much action, not a peep from the roost. We called in a lonely hen that strutted for us. We tried another spot around 10 AM and noticed that there weren't any tire tracks in there from the morning. We got a distant response by 10:15. After confirming a direction, we went on a run down one ridge and up the next and crossed a rocky drainage in the bottom. "It" turned out to be "they", three Tom's. We didn't think they were coming after 20 minutes or so. Seemed like they went from 500 yards to 100 yards in an instant. Two of them fully committed, but the lucky one veered wide. Boyd pounded the first at 40 yards and I cleaned up on the second when he hesitated.
I don't typically use anything but a mouth call, but my brother bought me a personalized glass over glass call for my birthday. I used it until they committed and finished with a mouth call. We were both shooting 12s with 1 5/8 oz of 8.5s. Boyd likes my Vortex Venom setup.

Great post and pictures as usual. I was expecting snow still to be in the area.

Way to go, Hobbes. Nice pics, as always!
May I assume you're not here to inquire about the alcohol or the tobacco?
